    The subscriber-only cover was fantastic, I must admit. It was much more Gaga, much less Stefani Germanotta.

    Lucky for me, I receive an Elle subscription addressed to my home for "Justin Smith." I do not know who the heck Justin Smith is, but I receive a lot of weird promotional crap (like tampon samples and mag subscriptions) for him. Maybe he's an OB/GYN and his office is on one of the many Forest Streets in this country.

    @cate3710: It's some quote in German. If I could find the link, I would. It's about whether or not you must, as an artist, write/perform, etc, if that's what you need to live. Something like that.

    @regazza_di_lupo: From what I can make out from the poor quality photos and some blog entry I found, it's possibly from the letter from 17 February 1903 in Rilke's Letters to a young poet.

    Dieses vor allem: fragen Sie sich in der stillsten Stunde Ihrer Nacht: muß ich schreiben? Graben Sie in sich nach einer tiefen Antwort. Und wenn diese zustimmend lauten sollte, wenn Sie mit einem starken und einfachen ich muß dieser ernsten Frage begegnen dürfen, dann bauen Sie Ihr Leben nach dieser Notwendigkeit....

    Translation:

    This above all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write? Burrow into yourself for a deep answer. And if this should ring in agreement, if you ever might confront this question with a strong and simple I must, then construct your life according to this necessity....

    @i'm a bottle: Oops! I was wrong. Forget what I just wrote. The German edition of Glamour says that this is the quote (it was the previous sentence):

    Prüfen Sie, ob er in der tiefsten Stelle Ihres Herzens seine Wurzeln ausstreckt, gestehen Sie sich ein, ob Sie sterben müßten, wenn es Ihnen versagt würde zu schreiben. Dieses vor allem: Fragen Sie sich in der stillsten Stunde Ihrer Nacht: Muss ich schreiben?

    Examine whether it [the reason for writing] spreads its roots in the deepest spot of your heart, admit whether you would die were you denied writing. This above all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write?

    @regazza_di_lupo: It's a great quote. Take a look at Rilke's original letter, though. It's good. The very language, however, and the themes of self-discovery, the theory of a natural genius and the idea that the civilizing influence of society negatively impacts art are also in Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther (the letter from 22 May 1771). Rilke also uses the metaphor of society as a prison cell. I'm convinced that Rilke so internalized that letter from Werther that he reemployed it automatically. BTW, I'm not the biggest fan of Rilke. He talks nice but it's all very clichéd.

    I'm not on board with the ELLE hate. At least they offer something to read every month (and not just about fashion and makeup; they had a provocative piece on 'gender disappointment' last month that both fascinated and repulsed me), and they pay a lot of attention to books. Unlike, say, Vogue or Bazaar.

    @BlondeGoddess: I agree, I personally think its the best of the mainstream fashion mags. There are a lot of interesting articles and features. Vogue I think is a classification of its own and does its things pretty well, but to me Bazaar is just a bunch of pretty pictures of things I can't afford.

    @BlondeGoddess: I agree. Elle and Vanity Fair are my favorite magazines as they actually have some decent articles. And almost every American fashion magazine is better than the mags they have where I live (Mexico) that are like catalogs of clothing against white backgrounds, where every item hovers around 2000 USD.

    @DutchessOfDork: There was a long thread about that a couple of weeks ago. I did some investigative research (ie took off my sweater and made the same pose in front of a mirror) and wow! Same weird result. Foreshortening, rather than photoshop. For once.

    @downhillracers: I haven't put it on yet, but it looks pretty simple. It's actually kind of like a temporary tattoo but instead of paint it's eyeshadow. It's a little card with the eyeshadow printed on it and you put it on your eyelid and rub the back.

    @erinna: Oh no no, you can buy something like that, but what I'm talking about (and what I think they're talking about) is a little card with the pre-printed eyeshadow on it that you stick on your eyelid.
