I'm not on board with the ELLE hate. At least they offer something to read every month (and not just about fashion and makeup; they had a provocative piece on 'gender disappointment' last month that both fascinated and repulsed me), and they pay a lot of attention to books. Unlike, say, Vogue or Bazaar.
@BlondeGoddess: I agree, I personally think its the best of the mainstream fashion mags. There are a lot of interesting articles and features. Vogue I think is a classification of its own and does its things pretty well, but to me Bazaar is just a bunch of pretty pictures of things I can't afford.
@BlondeGoddess: I agree. Elle and Vanity Fair are my favorite magazines as they actually have some decent articles. And almost every American fashion magazine is better than the mags they have where I live (Mexico) that are like catalogs of clothing against white backgrounds, where every item hovers around 2000 USD.
@DutchessOfDork: There was a long thread about that a couple of weeks ago. I did some investigative research (ie took off my sweater and made the same pose in front of a mirror) and wow! Same weird result. Foreshortening, rather than photoshop. For once.
@downhillracers: I haven't put it on yet, but it looks pretty simple. It's actually kind of like a temporary tattoo but instead of paint it's eyeshadow. It's a little card with the eyeshadow printed on it and you put it on your eyelid and rub the back.
@Zombie Ms. Skittles: I have to admit, I would probably buy that. How does it come out? I'm imagining applied its just like a bronzey brown eye shadow?
@erinna: Oh no no, you can buy something like that, but what I'm talking about (and what I think they're talking about) is a little card with the pre-printed eyeshadow on it that you stick on your eyelid.
@Zombie Ms. Skittles: THAT, my friend, is awesomely amazing and I would totally buy that!! how fun. right- rest of day to be spent scouring internet for leapard print eyeshadow stickets
You know, I've always had a big crush on Natalie Portman, and always had a ton of respect for her because of her intellect and (mostly) awesome choice of movie roles. But I am still waiting for her to explain the Polanski business. It's putting a serious damper on my Natalie-love.
@bookling: Agreed on all counts. The Polanski business was so disappointing. She's is so talented and seems very intelligent. Don't know if the love will survive...
I wish they would have asked her about Roman Polanksi; it's well-known her name is on that petition. Fair game.
I don't particularly understand her point about muse-ship, especially since muse-ship has been the sole reason for her characters in both Beautiful Girls and Garden State. Perhaps others, too.
She's notoriously choosy about the roles she accepts, so why would she want to represent a muse if she is so uncomfortable with the idea in real-life? Seems contradictory to me.
@PaigeTurner: A fashion mag like Marie-Claire is probably going to shy away from anything vaguely controversial like the Polanski support. I'm not shocked that they don't even touch upon it.
Not a huge fan of her acting resume, but she's got a damned good point about muses. What's the point of a woman being behind every good man if they never get any recognition beyond a book's dedication page?
Dammit. I want to hate her because she's perpetuating the Jane Austen Zombie thing that just won't die (there's a zombie joke in that somewhere...), which I hate, but then she goes all looking adorable and wearing covetable lipcolor on that cover, and even daring not to fawn over Woody Allen and ScarJo, and she makes me like her again.
That said, they should really be dressing the archetypal Manic Pixie Dreamgirl as Tinkerbell, shouldn't they?

Though I do think that is a funny/clever way to phrase that... the artist sucks the life out of the muse...
