So Comtesse Ole' Dried Up sure is sassy in that dead behind the eyes way.

I'm amazed the Countess even knows her way around the kitchen, much less peddle a cookbook, if she takes such pride in not cooking anything herself.

And honestly, someone has to teach her some basic, selling 101 skills. You can't successfully market a product on a wide scale if you shamelessly condescend to the people you're trying to sell it to. Never American chocolate, my foot.

Condescending arrogance just really irks the egalitarian side of me. It shows a complete lack of grace and decency that no amount of titles or riches can cover up.

This woman reminds me of a villianess from a Judith Krantz novel.

Which reminds me, a grey day like today is the perfect time to re-read Princess Daisy.

Sorry Comptesse, but French royalty hasn't been around in hundreds of years. I hate these European "royalty" who don't seem to realize there is no more royalty in their country and cling on desperately to titles which have no meaning or use anymore. Sorry honey, you're a pleb like everyone else now!

@GoodBadNotEvil: They are still, technically, royalty. It's like the Greeks, they are titled but not ruling. They call them "pretenders" which means they lay claim to an abolished throne. Most of them just desperately hold on to their castles and shizz while trying to marry the kids off to some new money.

    I watch a lot of PBS. ;)

Deference to the heirs to abolished thrones should be optional, IMHO.

@Tiger Lourdes: Zombie Hunter: I think the 'pretenders' reference is pretty relevant here. If there's no throne to claim, they're full of shit to bandy about titles that refer to... nothing. My niece _pretends_ she's a t-rex, but her imagination doesn't make it so.

@Dodai: So I am supposed to buy a cookbook written by a woman who hasn't cooked anything in 26 years? How about I spend the money ordering some dessert next time I go out? I figure I'll still end up ahead on the deal and I can support an actual pastry chef.

@sadiehawkins: but American chocolate is crap. she's hardly alone there. once you've eaten Lindt (which is a relatively low-end chocolate), it's hard to go back to overprocessed Hershey's, and that's what she means.

@Alohamaid: Not a lady... But anyway... I was saying why cheap chocolate can't compete, not why all American chocolate sucks.

And I don't know whether Martha actually recommended good chocolate (I assume she did not), or why (as I did) because I didn't see the rest of the show. I do assume that PilgrimSoul and Martha are talking about American grocery-store chocolate, though.

@2pint: my apologies. I totally agree most mass produced American chocolate is shit but I find it a little sad people not realize how many great chocolate houses we have on these shores. I can get scharffen burger in my grocery store, so I think good chocolate is become more widespread.
