@AmericanSplendor: David Sedaris makes fun of the People crossword (or maybe it was TV Guide's, same diff) in one of his stories. I think the clues were "It holds up your pants (4 letters)" and "Gone ____ the Wind."
I wonder why the first time I hear about great women like Corazon Aquino is always from Jezebel and never from grade school/high school/college... guess we never really stop learning.
@dridirtitini: Damn, this makes me feel old, because I first heard about Corazon Aquino on CNN way back when they were reporting, in real time, the overthrow of Ferdinand Marcos. It felt like a real momentous occurrence, even though it was happening way over on the other side of the world, in a place that, until then, I hadn't even known existed.
@dridirtitini: Unfortunately, most of the US educational system is still heavily biased towards Europe and only Europe, even when it's "world" history or geography. My AP world history class completely ignored the Pacific rim, focusing on China, India, the northern part of Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The Americas were mentioned only once Europeans arrived. Had I not been an interested and motivated outside learner, I might have believed that was all there was to it until college (I went on to do an BA in international relations with a focus on US-Australia relations and then an MA in IR in general, so fuck the lack of focus on the Pacific!).
Pink, green and gold eyeshadow combos. Those were the days!
I also had a dress like the pink satin nightmare worn by Morgan Fairchild. It was in electric blue, though, and the hem fell at mid-calf. I was forced to wear it when I was forced to be an attendant for my sister's first wedding. With white practical pumps. In November. At least my eyeshadow was cool.
I want these pictures. All except the Woody Allen one. Skeevy. And, Holy Mother 'o GOD Jamie Lee!!! I know everyone already said it but DAYUM!! She is teh secks!! Also, I will always love Jac-kaaaay. She is priceless. Ah well I think all the ladies look fantastic in these pics. When I am aged, I want to be Bea Arthur. And live in Fla with my bishes. And recline in chaise lounges on the lanai.
@notwhoyouthoughtiwas: That's what FloJo used to wear before she ran. Her track suits were elaborate. That, and her nails...were like, a signature for her. Plus, she could like, dust fools too.
Creepy, creepy Woody Allen. So, much time has passed that I think people don't fully comprehend the sheer creepiness. I feel sadness for Mia...like, still.
Awww...the 80s a time I can (somewhat) recall. I remember that I used to adore Florence Griffin Joyner and 227. That pic would have made my life as a youngin'.
And Patti's geometric, mile-high cut defined 80's craziness for me. Lest we forget...The Vanessa:
I wish that I could have found a still pic, but that would not have totally captured the essence of the geometric cut paired with a random phony pony(tail) of a totally different texture and the bold and sassy outfit.
It seems like the 80's was the last time when shamelessly garish, over-the-top fashion was popular. And then the "I'm just a regular bloke/gal" style of dressing down kicked into the next decade.
