@salthegeek: He still eats cookies, but after he lost his left foot to the 'betis, he realized he had to cut back on the sweets a little. Cookies are a "sometimes food" now. #sesamestreet
I used to work in an adjacent tv studio, and we shared a commisary with Sesame Street. I'll admit, it was hard to eat lasagne with Gordon and Maria sitting right there... I love these people more than I can say, and it's totally trippy to watch this with the kids in my life.
Okay, I HATE awards shows, and that made me bawl like I haven't since I saw the clip of Mr. Rogers from the post we had a while back. And I love that they brought the puppeteers out front.
@curiousgeorgiana: Me too. I watched this with my niecellings and they kept squeeling for Zoe and Elmo while I was excited to see Telly and Grover. The montage made me tear up, especially when they showed the clip of Big Bird asking about Mr. Hooper.
Sandra Oh's awful dress is completely forgiven because of her obvious delight at presenting this award. I feel the same way, Sandra! Sesame Street is rainbows and sunshine and big fluffy clouds and running through the sprinklers on hot summer days.
@bluebears: We had the same thing with Luis when I was about 3 or 4! He led the crowd of kids as we sang the Spanish numbers song he used to sing (that there's no online video of, sadly), and I got to meet him and get his autograph, which I kept for YEARS. Sadly, it was lost in one of our 6 moves during my younger years. But Luis and Maria were hands down (even before the mall event) my favorites. I so imitated his "Agua" sketch, with full-on silly exaggeration, as a kid whenever I got thirsty and could army-crawl like I was dying into the kitchen and grab hold of my mom's leg. :D
@bluebears: Maria was awarded an honarary degree by my alma mater the year that I graduated. She and that African cardinal that every progressive Catholic hoped would be the next Pope.
@wednesdayam: OMG, AGUA! I remember that clip, and it's one of the few that isn't on the DVDs. Mr. JB and I still do the desperate agua act from time to time.
I guess I'm mostly indifferent. I mean, I can see the reason for wanting to set a good example for kids, but I don't think Cookie Monster is the reason that a lot of kids grow up with issues with food. I mean, he's a blue monster with eyes that roll and don't focus.
What kid doesn't try to shovel a bunch of cookies in their face like Cookie Monster? Then they realize that this is stupid, and they don't do it again except for when they're being bratty.
