You have forgotten the most important similarity: the country/world would be a whole lot better if both of these people went far far away and never came back.

The most irritating thing about this is that they do have points, and the left has allowed them to have those points, and given them the ammunition. Yeah, Obama isn't any more pro-gay marriage than any conservative out there, and there is a lot of sexism on the left. Look at what they did to Hillary Clinton. We choose to ignore these things, and this is what happens.

These two make Miss Teen SC look like a genius. At least she's realized that the thing that made her famous is a joke, and she's willing to laugh at it and make fun of herself. Who knew she'd be my favorite conservative beauty queen?

Oh waaah. The only reason these women think they have it so hard is because they're so damn used to being treated better because they're white and pretty and feminine, and the ideal conservative women. Being treated the same as everyone else is not discrimination, dumbass(es).

What I don't get is that these women spend a hell of a lot of time explaining that they DO oppose gay marriage, but never really dwell on WHY.

I would really like to hear an explanation as to why. Preferably one that does NOT include the phrase "opposite marriage".

@toastandlove: Y'know, this is a really good point, not just for Prejean and Palin, but for all the people shouting that gay marriage is EEEEVIL and will destroy America. I really want to go up to them and ask them to use real data, not just a vague shake of the Bible, to convince me of their point.

Moral of the Story: Back your thesis up with actual evidence, people!

@Zapatos: I Googled "why be against gay marriage" and came up with a bunch of different lists, mostly detailing how if we let the gays marry it will be the beginning of the decline of the family (lots of families are currently fucked up, we don't need the gays to do that), how it will inevitably lead to polygamy (silly fear mongering), how schools will be required to teach this "perversion" as normal (don't see how teaching kids to be accepting of all relationships is a bad thing), and how if we let the gays get married, they'll get all the same rights as the straights (kinda the point). So really, it just comes down to bigotry. And this convinces people?

@Zapatos: Yep, if your only reason to be against gay marriage, or anything else that may or may not be a law, is the Bible, that's not a good reason. There's that whole church and state seperation. Using religion as a reason for a law kind of violates that.

@Red-headed bookworm: Plus, to piggyback off toastandlove, but if they are going by what the Bible says, then they should be advocating for marriage between a man and sixteen wives and four thousand concubines.

But then again, that assumes they've actually read the Bible, and it's been my experience that the majority of those who wave it around as some sort of authority on modern-day morality haven't actually read it.

@whynotshesaid: Unfortunately, it has been explained to me that not everyone in the Bible, even the heroes, are paragons of good behavior. Just because some dude in the Bible does it, doesn't mean it's okay.

King's David and Solomon had lots of wives and concubines and it was bad. Not that the Bible tells us that. We just need to understand it. "that's how society was back then"; "look at all the trouble having all those wives caused them: David had someone murdered and Solomon let his pagan brides worship their heathen gods in his city"

It takes a degree to know what's advice and what's a warning.

All I can add at this point is this: If my charter-subscriber-to-Ms., protesting on the streets of DC in the 60s and 70s, multiple degree holding Original Feminist mom had an opportunity, Carrie Prejean would definitely NOT be "still standing." Mom is 66 years old and all kinds of pissed-off. Her exact words to me the other day were "I'd like to bust her in one of those rubber boobs." Man, I love my mother.

I'm sick to death of the argument that having an opinion that's criticizes is some kind of infringement on your freedom, speech, or entitlement to that opinion. Or that being criticized for that opinion is in any way comparable to the discrimination homosexuals and other marginalized people have been grappling with forever because other people feel their opinions are more important than civil/human rights.

Have at your opinions, ladies. No one is saying you can't have them. But opinions are not sacrosanct and above criticism just because you feel strongly about them. Especially not when you want those opinions to directly effect the equality UNDER THE LAW of other people.

I'm sorry most of their opinions are ill-informed, bigoted, thoughtless, and rely on a narrow religious agenda. But that doesn't belong anywhere near the public schools, Ms. Prejean. The public schools are responsible for teaching reality, not morality.

The level of self delusion is something they both have in common, too. And that same smug hypocrisy a lot of the radical right seems to favor. We're persecuted! We're the majority!

@tiredfairy: Ugh, yes! Precisely no one is telling Prejean or Palin they are not entitled to their opinions. Free speech does not mean you are immune to criticism. It means that you have the right to hold and express opinions. But it's fair game for everyone else to point out how problematic, bigoted and hypocritical those opinions are.

Also? How can these people think it's ok to whine about the "discrimination" they supposed face, while actively lobbying to take other people's legal rights away? The lack of self-awareness, it boggles my mind.
