In response to her critics in the Almanac,, Sotomayor's colleague was quoted in the NYT saying "Some lawyers just don’t like to be questioned by a woman," Judge Calabresi added. "It was sexist, plain and simple."
Graham, I hope you appreciate that we live in a world where if a woman senator spoke to a male nominee like this she would be labeled a bitchy, nagging harpy. Women could not come remotely close to your questioning style and survive. It IS wrong, but that's a fact.
The Republicans suck. We allowed Bush to have his picks for the court (Roberts and Alito); they should allow Obama to have his. So long as he is not appointing someone clearly incompetent, unready for the job (i.e., Harriet Miers), or spouting off political views on a daily basis, his pick should go through. The Senate is there for advice and consent, but it's pretty much the rule that, barring some catastrophe of a pick like Harriet Miers, a president should be allowed to appoint whom he pleases.
Does anyone have access to these Almanacs on judges? I have no doubt Graham has cherry picked all this bullshit, and that there is no way her colleagues have never been called out either!
Also, could he be any more condescending with all of this?
@PinkSoxHat: No shit! If Scalia doesn't berate the lawyers who appear before him, I don't know who does. He even puts that shit in his opinions, which, while entertaining, is hardly professional or indicative of a "good" judicial temperament.
OMG, did you hear when he said "don't become a speech writer, because you then say that things are taken out of context"??????? (yes, I'm paraphrasing, here, 'cause I don't have time to copy the transcript) I'm still fuming over that one.

@Little Green Frog: Her retort should have been: "Well, I won't become a speech writer, if you promise not to become a judge." I'm thinking she said that in her head. I so want to ask her.
i feel like this was one of those moments where people say, i understand that some people are sexist/racist pigs, but i'm not... but you need to know that as a woman and as a minority, you need to learn the rules of the white man if you want to play in our old boys club.
i give a lot of credit to sotomayor, cause i would have lost my temper.
"the only reason I keep talking about this..." is because i have nothing else of substance to talk about.
Also, little is inspirational about a white male succeeding in american society since it happens all the g-d time. It would be absurd for you to claim the several odds stacked in your favor help you do your job better since that's been the status quo from day one. UGH STFU Linds!
The "Wise Latina" quote was a lot longer than any of them are actually quoting. They are patently leaving out the rest of the quote which is vitally important to understanding what she was talking about.
A thanks to Sotomayor for throwing in his and every other fucking senator questioning her on this's face that Alito said the exact same fucking thing at his hearing but apparently they didn't care enough to follow him up on it. They were probably charmed by it. It mean the SCOTUS is only out to serve the white man right?
God, these people are collection of humanity fails. And they wonder why their party is no longer in power.
@EkaterinaBallerina: I'm so glad you said this. I'm tired of the news only using a one sentence portion of what she said to make a story. If they read back what she REALLY said there would be no story to report on.
SEN. GRAHAM: Okay. Say it to me. Can you recite it from memory?
That was Graham's "Mexican Hat Dance Moment." Oblique reference to the M*A*S*H episode where Harry Morgan plays the crazy general who asks the black man before him to "dance."
You know what I think? He's threatened by her, and going to bring her down to his level. There have only been, what, 110 Supreme Court Justices ever? He's threatened that a Latina woman is going to have a better place than him in the annals of history.

What's that you say? It's okay because he's a tough Italian and she's just a Latino bitch? Yeah, that's what I thought.

SEN. GRAHAM: If I may interject, Judge, they find you difficult and challenging, more than your colleagues.
I really wish you hot Latinoids would let me spank you the way I've always dreamed of doing, but all you crazy bitches hate me for some reason.

You just needed to know when and where the full speech was given. It was at Berkeley in 2001.
