I was under the impression Obama chose Gregg BECAUSE he was a Republican--it would have meant that the Democratic New Hampshire governor would have likely replaced Gregg with a Democratic Senator. Which would have strengthened the Democratic majority and helped Obama push his agenda through. Am I batshit?

@Nightcrush: Well, not batshit, but misinformed. Obama has said all along that he wanted Republicans in the Cabinet -- team of rivals and all that -- and there was an agreement on the table that Gregg would only take the position provided said Democratic Governor named a Republican as his replacement -- and if I'm not mistaken, one had already been named.

All of which makes Gregg look even more like a silly man, in my opinion, because he sure put a lot of people through a lot of hoops before he realized it was a mistake. But hey. Shit happens. Better he realized it now than later!

I don't appreciate your flippancy in regards to the plane crash in Buffalo. Yes, shit is fucked up around the world, and the loss of 50 "privileged" lives may seem small to you. But I think most of us can stop and feel sorrow for the lives lost, as well as empathize with the people who will never see their mother, father, sister, son, etc...again. Is anyone saying this a greater tragedy than whats going on in Sri Lanka? NO, but it hits close to home. Because when a person dies a sudden death it's a tragedy, whether it's the lives of some "privileged" few or not. We don't have to ignore whats going on politically and internationally while we take a moment to respect the lives lost just last night.

I am so very late to the party this morning (I was actually churning out work all morning long. It's insupportable, I know!) but I just want to say:

Thank you Megan for mentioning the 200,000 ethnic Tamil refugees. For all that I go on (and on) about Israel and the Palestinians, at least they got an envoy. Who on earth is really paying attention to East Timor?

@LizbethAnne: Team Oregon, fuck yeah! He's not my rep, and he's Republican to boot, but that whole thing was made of awesome.

On the other hand, one of my besties does white collar criminal defense and has been working on the peanut case for OVER A YEAR. Before any charges have even been filed. So clearly the collective management of these plants knew long ago they were flirting not just with civil liability but criminal liability, as they have been gearing up to defend themselves against criminal charges for more than a year.

Judd Gregg is a good example of why I don't ever trust anyone with the first name "Judd" or the last name "Gregg," due to their unnecessary and cavelier attitude about wasting consonants by doubling up on the end. "Judd Gregg" is the SUV of names.

@stacyinbean: The Census has become a political tool. Well, it always has been really, back to the time before the Civil War anyway. Load up your districts to ensure your party maintains power. Frankly, the Census Bureau needs to be its own separate department, funded independently of Commerce. The Census is not only responsible for the Constitutionally-mandated headcount, but provides useful demographic information on population trends that is used by city planners and resource boards. It really needs to be taken out of the hands of the politicos.

I think that was a bigger issue than the actual stimulus bill, because Gregg only realistically has two more years in the Senate, but as Commerce Secretary he could have made sure the deck was stacked more in the Republicans favor. Apparently he missed the bit about Commerce losing control over The Census.
