and yes, I'm Black, but I refuse to comment on what she said.... she's a silly little girl. Even though she's older than me.

Ladies (and the few gents;) FOR REALZ STOP IT. It is happening on the Prop H8 thread also and it is disheartening. Take a real look at your own prejudices and see if you have a commitment to working towards an America where all people feel valued despite any differences they may have to the majority in our country.

Seriously. I'm kind of disappointing in my fellow commenters today. I'm also sad that the public education system in America has failed people so much that people don't understand what connotations the word "colored" has.

You're at a store, the sales girl helps you find your size, gives you advice, etc. You get to the cash register and they ask you "was someone helping you with this?" and you say yes, but you didn't ask the girl's name. You're asked "Can you please describe who was helping you?". You're white, the salesgirl is Black, the girl asking you the question is Black. I never know what to answer in this situation. I never know what words are considered offensive, and what words are considered PC. Is African American considered better than Black? Anyone else feel awkward in that situation?

Does the race of the clerk make that much of a difference in you mind as to what you would do? What would you do if it was a white salesclerk that you hadn't gotten the name of? Just do that.

LiLo is under 25. The only reason she would be using "colored" instead of "Black" or "African American" --even if it was a 'slip'-- is she grew up around folks who use to term often.
And who cares why we want to be called Black or African American. If I asked you to called me Purple, please do me the respect as a fellow human being and call me Purple. Sheesh!

Plus, I grew up in the South, which in terms of tolerance ain't too different than Long Island- so yeah, Lilo I see excatly where you're coming from and all I really want you to do now is: Shut your piehole.

She seems to have trouble speaking in general.
