@Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate: That's what I'd assume. Lots of countries start out adopting to qualified interested parents, and then slowly narrow the scope to knock off the gays, the "partners" and then single people. Ethiopia was one of the recent examples.

Though the Syria thing surprises me and makes the whole story suspect. Egypt just imprisoned two foreign families for adopting, because adoption's not recognized by law. I don't remember Syria being on any of the lists I looked at when I was researching. #angelinajolie

I'm getting extremely annoyed and borderline offended that people are insinuating that having an addictive personality/OCD means you can't possibly have lots of children because you want them.

Are any of ya'll Ms. Jolie's mental health care provider? No? Then please, refrain from armchair psychology. It just makes life harder for those of us who do deal with OCD/addiction. #angelinajolie

@HannahBethD: Agreed. Commentors would lose their shit if someone implied that a woman who didn't want any children had a mental disorder. And yet a woman who chooses to have more than three is apparently a hoarder and/or has OCD.

People can make choices different than yours without being "crazy". #angelinajolie

While my opinion matters not a whit, I have to say I'm happy for them. The only thing I find sad is that for celebrities, the adoption process isn't nearly as daunting as it is for average peeps. I mean from what I understand the costs of adopting are horrendous and people go broke doing it because they want a kid that bad. So what makes me sad is that you know there are folks out there reading all about Madonnas or Angelinas latest adoption and crying because for regular people it's just so hard. Idk. This isn't meant to begrudge Angelina or Madonna or cast a pall over their motives or their happiness. I just wish it were that easy for everyone: visit a country, fall in love with a kid, fill out papers, pay, take kid home. But it's not, and that's shitty. #angelinajolie

@Aesop's Foibles. YES.: It just seems like it is not hard for celebrities... mainly because the cost of the attorneys and adoption agencies involved is not an issue. She can afford to pay the hundreds of thousands of dollars for a legion of lawyers to handle the nuances and intricacies of international adoption and then once all the hard work has been done, she can step in and sign the papers. Thus giving the appearance that the process is easier for her and other celebrities. #angelinajolie

@Tangy.Nihilista.Barcelona: Right. Which matters, because obviously cost is a major (and sometimes prohibitive) factor for common folks. But we shouldn't make it seem like a cakewalk for celebrities. I think I remember it took many many months to line up and finalize Pax's adoption. #angelinajolie

@Tangy.Nihilista.Barcelona: Besides that, most of the early stages of the adoption process are not particularly public -- you meet with social workers, you fill out a lot of paperwork, and then you wait. It's only at the very end that it becomes public. So, when you're looking at a celebrity adoption, you only see the end result, not the time and work that went on in private.

At least with her Vietnam adoption, my understanding is that Angelina Jolie went through a very reputable adoption agency (I knew which one but have now forgotten) and jumped through all the same hoops as any other person. Her adoption was expedited not because of who she is but because Pax was an older child and those adoptions are handled differently within most countries.

Also -- international adoptions do not cost "hundreds of thousands of dollars." Every single adoption agency that works internationally has information about costs posted on its website and you will not find that number anywhere. #angelinajolie

@doodley is not amused: I guess I meant it is not the costs of the adoption agency that is the bulk of it. It is the cost of the lawyers involved, especially when some issue comes up whether that is in the background check of the adoptive parents or addressing roadblocks by officials of the adoptive country...and issues that may arise in the adoptive parents' host country.

"hundreds of thousands" was just a number I threw out to make the point that for celebrities with money, international adoption can be easier and more efficient because they don't have to worry about the costs and can pony up an extra lawyer fees to navigate the adoption laws of a country in an expeditious manner if needed. #angelinajolie

I find it hard to believe that Brad is "fed up" with all the children or whatever the magazines keep going on about. Every actual interview I've seen or read he's said they plan to add more. I think I heard "our own soccer team" tossed out once or twice. What is the big obsession with him not wanting anymore kids? Is is just because people want to see him punished for what he "did" to Jennifer Aniston? #angelinajolie

@Triphena: It's another story the tabloids can twist to being about mothers being just obsessed with babies and fathers looking to fly the coop. So naturally, they're all over it.

I also think it's not so much that they're anti-Brad as anti-Angelina. A lot of people still see her as an Anne Boleyn of sorts who grabbed Brad away from the woman he "should" be with, and can't wait to see when the "spell" will wear off, so they're grasping at straws for any sign of romantic discontent. People never want to blame the man, they always want to blame the "other woman" - even though he was the one cheating on Jen, and Angelina wasn't in a relationship at the time, so if anything, he has more to be ashamed of than she does. #angelinajolie

Can we take a step backwards and check out whether or not unmarried couples are even able to adopt in Syria? Tabloids are notorious for spinning their own tales out of completely innocuous events. She may be adopting solo because it's the only legal way. #angelinajolie

@EkaterinaBallerina: I posted a link below to the Damascus Embassy's info on adoption. In a nutshell, adoption is a matter handled by the individual religious orders. Muslim children are not adoptable and most Christian denominations also will not allow adoption because it raises inheritance issues because Syria is a predominantly Muslim country.

FWIW, I've been involved in the international adoption community for about 9 years and I have never even heard of adopting from Syria which is why I went to look it up.

Also, yes, adopting solo would be the only legal way. Other countries typically do not allow unmarried people to adopt. The way around that is for one partner to adopt as a single parent and then for the other partner subsequently to adopt the child in the United States. #angelinajolie
