Something I find interesting is that Hispanics are the fastest growing minority in the US, and it is projected that in like 30 years will be the majority group. What are Republicans thinking when they viciously attack Judge Sotomayor based on her Hispanic heritage? They are taking themselves right out of contention FOR EVER. And I love it!
@GTCosita: And this is why a Republican Senator from Texas is hastily distancing himself from all this vicious nonsense. Unfortunately for him, he is being drowned out by these sputtering irrational douchebags.
on north korea: the people know nothing other than what they have, and only what the government tells them. they would be horribly frightened if we took over. meanwhile, the government officials have ph.d.s in manipulation. how do we know anything they say to us is true? it is all a lack of honest communication that makes this situation really really sticky. odd how the small problems we have in interpersonal relationships translate to such a large scale? it really speaks to the idea that you must really know yourself to know the world.
@FashionShowAtLunch: I just got done doing that. It was like pulling teeth.
I like how, after a negative comment regarding race is made about Sotomayor by someone from the right, the left gets accused of always playing the race card.
It makes me want to headdesk on a slab of concrete.
Many of them seem to be laboring under the misconception that membership in the Democratic party requires that one be a racist. WTF.
It does console me somewhat that the people who are really bringing the crazy are the ones who can't spell or use correct grammar at even a fifth-grade level. This, to me, signifies the dwindling of the Republican base to nothing but a few inbred morons who listen to Rush Limbaugh religiously.
@kkatt: No, but he will keep doing his best "crazy leader" routine until one day he wakes up to find the Chinese Army poised at his northern border and a note on his desk from the Chinese government, that if he doesn't stop trying to destabilize the region, "measures will be taken."
As a Coloradoan, I feel the need to personally apologize for Tom Tancredo. It's true, we have some wackos here you guys. Thank god we have the BOULDER LIBERALS (dun dun dun!) to balance us out.
@I believe in peace, bitch:Those commercials during the election cracked me up: Sinister music, "Boulder LIBERAL Mark Udall!"
I just remind myself that the Tom Tancredo types are ultra loud and obnoxious, but Obama still won Colorado big time. But I'm still tempted to move to the west coast. . .
We don't hold you personally responsible. In fact, we enjoyed his visits to NH very much, during his abortive presidential campaign. I had the opportunity to tell him, to his face, that his manners would not make his mother proud - which I enjoyed the hell out of.
Methinks the Republicans should just call the whole thing off on Sotomayor and charge it to the game. They'll never get the votes to block her, and it'd be a waste of time trying to filibuster. Plus, she's not even that far left! I'd bet that whoever the next nominee is will face an apocalyptic battle, though.
@thegogglesdonothing: That's what I don't get. I think they're wasting their political capital here. When they get all rabid over Sotomayor, and she proves to be moderate, if left-leaning (but no Stevens), the next time they get their panties in a bunch over a nominee the public is going to be like "So?"
Once, Sotomayor wore gold earrings. Her hair is black, so the black and gold combination (the colors of the Latin Kings) must mean that she's a prominent member of the super scary Chicago-based street gang.
Ok, I get it. Anything that does not pay homage to the intrinsic superiority and long-standing suffering of the White Man is racist. Those poor white men with their higher rates of pay, lower rates of incarceration for crimes, standardized-testing catered to their mindset, and ability to colonize every other nation on Earth without repercussions. IT'S SO HARD, WHY CAN'T WE GIVE A WHITE MAN A CHANCE!!!???
@Penny: Dude, when you're annoying China, you know you're doing something right. Unfortunately, it's North Korea, and that something is so very not right. Ugh. I'm a bit worried, too. You kind of know they were just biding their time until the new administration took over...
@Penny: I hate to admit it, but for once my father's advocacy of "Goin' in there and taking him out, taking over and setting those people free" sounds almost legit if it means we can stop some of the crazy.
@tonightineed is actually Mrs. Ziegler-Spock: Considering the rumors of desperation-driven cannibalism and horrifying living conditions, I am almost inclined to agree. The Korean War was a legitimate conflict (unlike more recent such nonsenses) and it should have been resolved in the '50s. The whole situation is unnerving, to say the least.
@tonightineed is actually Mrs. Ziegler-Spock: lets see an exit plan too. i think "Goin' in there and taking him out, taking over and setting those people free" is how a lot of our wars in the last 40 years started and they didn't really go well.
@AtomiClash: Well, and I wonder sometimes why no one else has done anything about the issues there. I mean, perhaps I've missed out on something quite substantial, but I've never heard anyone else (any other nation, that is) talk of intervening or helping the Koreans with any real substance. Like I said, I may have quite missed something, but...
@tonightineed is actually Mrs. Ziegler-Spock: Any/all/most attempts have been thwarted by the North Korean government. They steal any aid coming in and sell it to their own people at extortionate prices or keep it for the "higher ups." They force farmers to grow opium poppies instead of food and don't pay for the crops they produce. It's truly horrifying.
There is no logic. Actually, I can tell you what their logic is. And this is scary. It's not that they think the advocacy group is like the KKK....it's that the KKK was just an advocacy group.
@Fridge Hussy : She's so cold! I'll just bet she has her per...: I don't think this is an 'American' issue. I think this is very easy to understand, its called racism. This particular strategy involves demonizing any organization that would challenge the status quo. I am pretty certain it also happens wherever in the world you are :-)
@Fridge Hussy : She's so cold! I'll just bet she has her per...: It's a catch-all insult. Crazy conservatives believe any group that advocates for a particular race or gender or minority group has to be separatist or communist in nature. They don't like the idea that some groups experience discrimination and just might need an organization to help them get their voices in the public discourse because it challenges the idea that we are start out equal so if bad things happen to you, it's your fault and you should get yourself out of your own mess. I think organization on the grassroots level in general makes GOPers nervous because that's how unions get started. Teabag parties notwithstanding, of course. Those are just the natural course of human events, you know.
@Fridge Hussy : She's so cold! I'll just bet she has her per...: it a classic case of projection, really. They think that by accusing others of their own racism, it absolves them of the self-same immorality. Keep in mind, this is the same group of people who thought being a community organizer was foolish, demeaning, what have you. They're assholes, plain and simple.
@sshacker: I don't think she meant it as a "what's wrong with your country, where I'm from it's perfect." But for some of us non-Americans, all the craziness seen from the outside makes us feel like we're missing a piece of vital information that would make it seem less crazy...even though we aren't. If I remember correctly, FH is a fellow Canadian, and trust me, there's idiots here too. (Not the same, but: A provincial rep in the majority party where I'm from just made a public statement saying that a debate that went until 3:30 in the morning was an insult to democracy).
I think that a member of the "Latino KKK" targeted me once. I woke up one morning and there was equality and cultural preservation all over my front yard. It was chilling.
@morninggloria: The Latino KKK recruits children, too: I once saw their child soldiers beating a brightly-colored papier-mâché donkey that was hanging from a tree. When the donkey finally spilled its innards on the ground, the rabid children went into frenzy. I nearly vomited.
Part of me (the part that has started to turn off the TV and stop watching the pundits) just wants the Repubs to keep talking. The more people they turn off, the more they expose what is truly motivating them, the less relevant they'll be as a party. Yep, keep spewing the crazy talk, just make sure when you show their name they have a big ol' (R) after it.*
*dear English language, please come up with a suitable third person neuter pronoun I can use. Please?
@laetitiae: I think your use of "it" is acceptable here. You want the (R) to appear after the name, which is an it. "...just make sure when you show their name, it has a big ol' (R) after it." Or, to match in number, "they" and "them."
@TheFormerJuneBronson: The use of "it" is correct. The question arises when you're speaking about a single unknown republican. If it's a singular subject, the use of 'their' is no correct and should be replaced with his/her.
