I need this to be on the market TODAY!

My guy is getting a vasectomy this month. I've tried so many forms of BC (including copper IUD) and nothing has worked with my body. My guy and I have two kids, I hate pregnancy anyway, and condoms just plain suck when your in a trusting, monogamous relationship.

However, I'm not 100% in favor of permanent sterilization. Which is what a vasectomy is considered. (Doctors say not to rely on the idea of a reversal - which is hella expensive and unreliable). Its a huge decision and its scaring the shit out of me!

My guy would happily try a bc pill or a male version of an IUD if it were available.

Get on it "science"!

@fluxus flucker: Just in case I offended anyone, with my above comment I meant that I'm not 100% ok with permanent sterilization for me and my husband at this time. For anyone else, carry on. Its awesome that it can be done for those who absolutely want it! :)

@sciencerules: Ha! That was meant to be "scientists" NOT "science. B/C when people talk about "scientists" it makes me giggle. So, I've incorporated that catch-all term into my vocab b/c it makes me laugh. "Scientist" is used as such a homogenous term. Not by Jezebel particularly, but in so much of the media. But the idea of "science" as an entity is still pretty funny to me, so I don't mind my failed joke too much. :)

@fluxus flucker: Easier explanation: I have an odd sense of humor and I enjoy making myself laugh even when no one else might get the joke - though I often forget that, so people probably just think I'm crazy. Believe, me I'm no creationist doubting the worth of the scientific method!

@fluxus flucker: Hahaha, I get it--and you're right. Scientist is a pretty generic term, especially as the media uses it. I'm also fond of using "it's just science" to justify completely ridiculous things, such as why I can't possibly study for my exam tomorrow. It's just science!

Withdrawal?? REALLY?! I found out in like, 6th grade that's not an effective way to prevent pregnancy. At least our sex ed covered that much. A doctor is citing "withdrawal" as a method of birth control? Even the mere mention pisses me off.

Although this would be amazing, I'm a little skeptical of their methods--basically they enrolled a bunch of families, shot the men with their shot, then sent them home to have BC-free sex with their partner. Then they counted how many pregnancies resulted. Given that there are so many variables that go into pregnancy, I think a better readout would have been sperm functional effects--can they tunnel into the egg? can they swim directionally? I think their reported success rate of 99.9% is too high.

To everyone saying they don't trust men to take the Pill: PEOPLE DELIVER WHAT YOU EXPECT!

When, as a society, or as a community, you EXPECT men to be irresponsible and communicate that, they will be irresponsible. If you EXPECT a child/ethnic group/gender/ etc. to underacheive, they will internalize this and react as such. Let's expect more of people.

I would expect my partner to care about birth control, should we decide to have sex. It can still be in my hands - to the people saying they want it in their control, can't you both take contraceptives and use a condom? I mean, we're talking an astronomically low percentage of failure.

Besides, I'm sure many men would love to have the chance to have reproductive control other than a condom or vasectomy.

I'm pretty sure that my husband would take this if I asked him to, but since he was 100% supportive when I recently went off the pill because of the synthetic hormones, I don't think I would want him to do something to his body that I'm not willing to do to mine.

That said, though, I think he might be in the minority; the majority of men don't care or don't know about the dangers of hormonal BC for women, and they certainly wouldn't want any of those dangers for themselves.

I'm curious about side effects because I can only see this taking off if the side effects for men are basically zero. Otherwise, this will never, ever be popular. Can you imagine a guy putting up with nausea, mood swings, and/or random blood spotting for a few weeks or months the way that women often do when they start a new type of hormonal BC?

This whole "men are too dumb to tie their own shoes-how can they remember to take a pill" attitude really bugs me. Yeah, ok, it's true for far too many men, but that's more because generation upon generation of women have coddled and cleaned up after them and allowed them to continue acting like giant toddlers. Increase the level of responsibility and they'll learn.

That being said, I'd never stop taking my pill, because I don't want to be pregnant and I don't think you should EVER rely on someone else to control things that affect you. Just like how I think if a guy really, really doesn't want a kid it's on him to wear a condom regardless of what the woman is doing. This shot seems like a pretty sweet idea on that level. If my boyfriend would stop being a big baby about needles anyway

The two categories of men whom I would expect to take the male pill are responsible guys who are willing to accommodate their partners who don't want to take the female pill, and paranoid MRA-types who think women are always trying to "accidentally" get pregnant and trap them. Every night during dinner, I hand my husband a multi-vitamin. If I don't hand it to him, he doesn't take it. We've been doing this for 3 years.
