"In the UK, circumcision is only carried out on the NHS in cases where it's medically necessary. It's usually performed as a last resort when other types of treatment have been unsuccessful."
"n England, the NHS doesn't fund ritual circumcision. However, in some areas of the country where there is a high population of ethnic minority groups, ritual circumcision may be carried out on the NHS for a fee. At these clinics, only newborn babies between 6-12 weeks old are circumcised, and the child must be registered with a GP in that area. After consultation, a GP, health visitor, or nurse will make a referral to the clinic. The procedure will not be carried out without the consent of both parents, and following careful consideration of the child's best interests."

This was linked to by the NHS website. I found it interesting, as it's written from a European, "why would anyone ever want to do that?" kind of perspective. Apparently non-medical cirumcision of children is illegal in Sweden.

Also? I'm really, really disturbed by the "aesthetic" argument for circumcision. The idea that soft layers and folds are "unpretty" seems too closely related to the idea that vaginas are intrinsically ugly, and I wish more folks would really think through their preferences on that. I mean, you like what you like - but sometimes what you like is needlessly biased by culture, so just be a little circumspect - no pun intended - yeah?
