Tracie, thank you for watching Oprah so I don't have to. It keeps me up on the small talk kind of knowledge I need to interact with middle aged ladies when at my serving job. I now know about Celine Dion's son's hair and Marion Jones' crazy steroid flaxseed oil. I'm set for the weekend. (And any small talk with my boyfriend's mother- she sometimes brings these things up)

My cousin used to run against (and consistently come in second to) Marion in high school and college. So yeah, she feels a little better about all those 2nd place medals and trophys on her shelf.

The people who I really feel bad for are the women who ran the relay with her and have to give back THEIR medals. I can't imagine how it would feel to work and train so hard, and then lose your medals because someone else lied.

@AbJams: Not to mention the women who lost their spot on the US Olympic Team to her. Or the athletes who lost the chance to run in the final heat because they were scheduled to run in the same early heats as her. Doping has wide range consequences.

The prevalence of steroid use in competative sports is staggering. Many of the athletes who chose to do steroids, or are willfully ignorant of what their trainers administer to them, do not get caught as there are any number of ways to get around the tests. With the focus solely on winning, and with the implication that your competitors also are already juiced, no wonder it is difficult for many athletes to resist. I don't blame Marion Jones, but the mentality that is drilled into these athletes from all sides to win at any cost, and those that facilitate them to do so.

@velvet.fistfull of love: A lot of drug addicts and alcoholics have trouble resisting too, but neither the justice system or my mom just doesn't (and shouldn't, IMHO) accept "everyone else was doing it, why can't I?" argument. I'm sorry, but that is a very immature excuse that carries absolutely no weight whatsoever. If you are an adult, you accept responsibility for the mistakes you make, learn from them, and stop making them.

But personal responsibility is key. Don't take drugs. And if you do, don't lie about it. Period.

Also, these people are role models for kids.

Either she was dumb not to get more information about what she was being given to put in her body, or she's dumb to keep lying about it. Either way, she's dumb.

I went to school with her husband, and I remember when it came out, kinda out of the blue, that they were getting married and expecting a baby, people really felt that his reputation was tarnished by virtue of his association with her (him being an Olympic sprinter also).

And her ex-husband/ex-boyfriend just keeps getting into more shit. The whole thing is just a damn shame.

@titilayo: ?? She never married her first sons father; her first husband was a track coach at Chapel Hill. Also, all the men she has been with (former husband, baby's father) have come to confess to steroid use via BALCO.

ugh. she is without shame. and it's STILL everyone's elses fault beside her own. its not like she is required to go to the public and beg forgiveness but to she chose to speak publicly to Oprah and then to just blatantly lie? unbelievable.

@anonymiss: not to mention the testimony of several other people that completely contradicts what she just sat there and told oprah. I don't know what their motivation would be to lie as it got them professionally disciplined/sent to jail/ruined career as well.

@anonymiss: @bluebears: I don't know if she's lying, but it certainly sounds like it.

That said, there is a reason why other people would lie while testifying - if offered a deal for a lesser sentence or no jail time, I suspect some people would lie or at least exaggerate what they know about others' use.

@anonymiss: She admitted to lying Fed investigators. That's not under dispute. What's under dispute is that she willfully took the juice. I wathced the whole interview while eating dinner on TV. It sure sounded like she knew and has remorse, even though her words were carefully chosen.

And, damn, she's beautiful... What talent, what a waste.
