I wish I had known, as an adolescent, that there were so many women out there who would also look at PG-rated porn like this for a little diversion.
Of course I realize that in most cases, we're talking about two different types of "diversion." But when you're a young male being exposed to this stuff, you think you're completely leaving behind the world of real women, because you think they'd never look at the SI swimsuit issue. (That's why some guys find themselves purchasing a lifetime subscription to Juggs just a short time later.)
If you had told my 13-year-old self that women look at the swimsuit models too -- even if most of them do it for different reasons than I did -- well, then you could have knocked me over with a feather.
Which is all by way of saying, any Jezzie who peeks at Bar or Hilary or Damaris -- even if it's just to critique the way a bikini bottom fits -- is 100% aces in my book.
@skahammer: Look, you're drooling over the fantasy of bi-curious women. There's nothing wrong with that except that you're doing it here. Jezebel is not the Erotic Encounters webpage.
'I can see why magazines like this exist to celebrate that.'
Magazines? As opposed to the entire rest of the American media? 'cause I'm pretty sure underweight women with giant boobs are pretty overrepresented in advertising and TV...
Dicker's body CAN NOT BE REAL. In that SI photo anyhow. That skinny with those size boobs and that long and skinny of an arm - with matching legs I'm sure - NOT REAL. Right?
Stock bikini poses abound. It's all models thrusting out their boobs and butts and sucking in their stomachs while making bedroom eyes.
Well, yes, of course. The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is spank material for straight men, and fashion mag shoots are aimed at women and fashion-following homosexual and bi- men. The poses and aesthetics -- and model's body types used -- are dictated by these marketing pools.
Straight dudes don't generally wank to elfin, adolescent-looking girls like Caroline Trentini in the shot above, though she's certainly pretty. Sexually arousing? Ask a hetero guy about that.
Is this really a revelation? This has less to do with the "middle-of-the-road" appeal of SI than how small and removed the fashion world is from the norm, and you are clearly drawing a value judgment, that fashion is better.
As MizJenkins noted, i'd rather wank material for straight men feature slim-though-womanly models with boobs and butts than the gamine or androgynous fashion shots included above for contrast. But ultimately you are really comparing apples and oranges...or pancakes and grapefruit?
Tatiana has this part exactly right -- once a cause for passionate outrage among prudish mothers and censorious school librarians, the SI swimsuit issue is now mostly an occasion for people like me to recall, in all innocence, what it was like to be a 13-year-old boy.
@gerbilsoutofexile...is cheap and easy: I don't know...thinking back, I don't think even my 10-year-old self would have described boobs as "disgusting."
Nor would I then have pranced around in imitation of a swimsuit model.
I can't help thinking these might be early hints for you, mom.
So, what I really want to know from Tatiana, is how they can shoot these in December in the freezing water, and not have every model with big goosebumps and blue lips. Are you models genetically gifted enough to stay warm half-naked in 40 degree weather?
Our stylist once forgot her supply of magical nude thongs and sent me out to Duane Reade for slim pantyliners. Peeling those out of the suits at the end of the day convinced me I could never be a stylist.
@Titania: Oh, those are things I wear out of the house so I won't leak pee in my underwear. Because I'm Old, and if I don't go right away, I leak. I leak like a motherfucker.

But again, the lack of articulation does work against me sometimes, I realize.

I find it sad that there is an SI for Kids, but when they grow up, it is assumed that the only people who read SI are men.

Gerbilboy: Mom, why is there a girl in a bikini on the cover? That's not a sport!
Me: I don't know, but they do it every year!
Gerbilboy: It's disgusting. Those bikinis are about ten sized too small. Like everyone, look at my boobies! (dances around with a smirk)
Me: sigh
How much you wanna bet that next year, when he's 12, this issue will be received with an ENTIRELY different attitude? Yeah, I thought so.

i remember when my cousin's son was mortified at the sight or thought of "naked ladies" at age 10. yeah, he got over it, but good.
