It's an exercise in joy from the Holy Spirit. Seen it quite a few times in my own church. It's got a good chunk edited out so it's hard to see what was being talked about initially.

It's a Charismatic (like Pentecostal, Assemblies of God) thing. Sorta like being "slain in the spirit" aka falling down at a Benny Hinn event, or speaking in tongues-- they see the uncontrollable laughter as a sign of the Holy Spirit taking them over and giving them joy. (Though I grew up Presbyterian, and we don't go in for these shenanigans.)

Why were there two guys holding up the pastor-guy? Maybe he was in his cups, and the congregation found this hilarious? I don't get it, and also I experienced a very strong fear response while watching. And the dude doing the worm, or whatever it was, made me feel like having a seizure. Actually the whole thing made me feel like having one. And FTR that is not an overstatement. Some things, like this video, make my brain run around in panicked circles with it's hands clutched to its face, going "Oh no! Oh No!! Oh NO!!!" And now it seems I can add "scary megachurch videos featuring members of the congregation doing the worm" to my list.

@KiddyKat: Kind of. It's a variant of being "slain in the spirit," which is when the Holy Spirit supposedly overwhelms you so much that you lose control of your body. It's basically just mass hysteria, obvs. It does look really freaky and I have a hard time understanding why it's supposed to be so great, but there you go.

No kidding- I visited a church once where someone passed out for real in the middle of the service and no one helped her for at least five minutes because they all thought she was just slain in the spirit. She's really suffered a sudden drop of blood pressure and got a bad concussion.

@AnotherJenn: Seconded on the mass hysteria. And then when you are one of those people who are not easily suggestible (I mean this in a hypnotism way, not to insinuate that faith communities are necessarily brainwashed) and you wind up at an Evangelical Bible Study camp and the children of the corn look askance at you because you aren't overcome by the spirit with wailing and crying and speaking in tongues and the like, that may be why you, as an adult, go to a very High Church Episcopalian Parish to get your weekly dose of Jesus without all of the theatrics and balderdash.

Although it wouldn't kill them to sing a hymn written after 1650.
