I disagree that people are refusing to age. What they're refusing to do is wear matronly clothing. And you definitely don't have to, as long as you choose clothes that are appropriate for your age and figure (the latter more important than the former.)

I was in H&M last night and knew exactly what I could wear and what was too young for me. Likewise, I was in Nordstrom's last week, trying on some things, and the sales woman said, "that's way too old for you."

I disagree that people are refusing to age. Some people refuse to grow up which is another matter all together. However, I think nowadays people are less willing to be placed into a box, wooden or otherwise, simply on the basis of their chronological age and for that we must thank baby boomers, who were never going to accept the rigid age demarcated roles of the past.

I have a friend-of-a-friend who is a clothing designer working on a bespoke suit for Mrs. Obama and even the DESIGNER does not know her measurements. That's right. They told the designer which sizes she wears on top and bottom and her height, but that's it.

@Easybreezy: If that's true, it's kind of dumb. Why on earth would one pay the kind of money one pays for a bespoke garment and not have it properly tailored?

(I am reminded of tales of French couture houses in their heyday, in which there used to be - perhaps still are - top-secret rooms where dummies of the wealthy and the famous stand, every hidden lump, bump and assymetry carefully padded into place so that it can then be rendered invisible and of no consequence through the expertise of the coutourier.)

@Merkin: @LaFemme: Yeah, it's really odd. I think the idea was that Michelle's personal tailor would make any last-minute alternations to the garment if need be.

I sort of thought maybe it was some kind of crazy security issue, but I don't know if that makes any sense. Like if the terrorists find out her measurements, they can...I don't know what...

@Easybreezy: This explains so much. When I look at her clothes, a lot of times I think "This would be perfect if you add a few inches of sleeve here, or nip this extra fabric from here." Obviously if the designer didn't have the exact measurements things like this would come up.

Of course, this could just be me being nitpicky.

@CassetteLove: I call b.s. on this account, too. There's no such thing as a standard 6 or a standard 10. When you have something custom made, you provide measurements, end of story. They're just not going to give them up, nor should they.

@msAnthrope: Co-sign! I liked them a lot! They aren't exciting but they are cute. I love my Alice+Olivia for Payless boots (though I felt poor when I walked past the actual A+O store wearing them, lol). I hope Payless keeps these partnerships going! I'm sad Issac Mizrahi ended his Target run, even though some of his pieces were a little boring there.

@gobblegirl: I was going to post the same thing. Saying "everyone is refusing to age" is both creepy and a little demeaning. It insinuates that aging is some universal experience, one that doesn't include exercise, or yoga, or any form of physical activity that isn't letting oneself go in a rocking chair while knitting and waiting for death to claim your sorry, sorry, soul. Aging isn't a lifestyle. Aging is life itself.

Fashion is so wonky. Where is the line between diversity in taste/beauty and fetishistic co-opting of people and cultures. The whole "African" trend piece in the Times makes me wonder if we'll every truly integrate fashion.
