Meh, I don't share the Jake Gyllenhaal love, Natalie. Not that I expect anyone here to agree ( I know there's a lot of love here for Jake G), but he gives off the same dead-eye vibe that Tom Cruise does.

@Diziet_Sma: have either of you seen Donnie Darko? I'm not a fan of too much that he's done since, but he is *fantastic* in that film. As is everyone else (Maggie Gyllenhal, Patrick Swayze and every other supporting actor in it). That film rocks.

@femminista: Donnie Darko is great and he's perfect in the role.
I think Jake is a good actor (not brilliant, but solid, good...)
My real love for him comes because he is so damn dreamy. Almost all the news that I ever read about him is about how sweet is his to his friends and family.
He took on a "gay role" which, sadly, is risky in Hollywood. Esp, for someone without a long, (fairly) solid career (I'm looking at you Sean Penn!)
When discussing Broke Back he always discussed it as a "romance" rather than a "GAY romance" despite the wording of interviewers and critiques of the film. I respect and admire him for that- for keeping it real.
He's not a big fame-whore. Just a working actor and nice guy. Who happens to be blessed with adorably good looks, dark hair, and blue eyes...swoon!
I suspect this is why many others have such huge crushes on him.
That was a very long defense. Ha! I guess, I'm a bigger fan that I realized!

Hey. So I was going to comment on Nicole Kidman's obvious lip enhancement on display at the AMA's the other day when I noticed that someone had been disemvoweled for doing exactly that. How is commenting on Gyllenhaal's nose any different? Not that I mind, because I really don't see how saying "it looks like [famous person] got work done" is particularly harmful, but it seems like a double standard.

@eatsshootsleaves: I gots to agree, I don't think calling someone out for either horrible or really noticeable plastic surgery is body snarking, there was a choice involved. Ms. Kidman has three lips now and looks NOTHING like she used to, its also painful ot see her in movies now trying to show emotion when half her face doesn't move. Isn't it disingenuous to pretend we don't notice?

@eatsshootsleaves: I think it might depend what you say about it. I've seen people point out work, and we certainly are all excited about Amy's boobs. Maybe they said something body snarky when it was pointed out? I hope so, because if not, that is a total double standard.

@itsonreserve: From what I can make out, she said she was "scared" of Nicole Kidman's artificial-looking lip enhancements. She meant this facetiously. I suppose that could be seen as body snarking, but certainly people have said similar things about hair, make-up, and clothing -- I don't think elective plastic surgery is much different, apart from its permanence. Whether or not you agree, I don't see how saying that it looks like Jake Gyllenhaal changed his nose isn't similar. In both cases, the point of the comment is saying a particular part of someone's body looks fake.

@eatsshootsleaves: I dunno, if someone said to you "Your face scares me" would you be insulted?

It's harmful because it encourages the notion that, as women, all our worth is wrapped up in our appearance; whether a woman is deemed attractive or not becomes the first thing to say about her - isn't there anything else one can say about Nicole Kidman? It makes you think before you comment and most people like coming here because the comments are more interesting and thoughtful as a result.

@mwynn13: Of course - but do we have to add to the vicious circle by mocking her for it? I, personally, cannot stop Nicole Kidman from having plastic surgery, but I, personally, can decide to stop making an issue of it, which means her appearance becomes less important than other aspects of her (her work, her character, her talent etc), which is at least a teeny, tiny step in the right direction. I mean, there is nothing witty or original about that disemvowelled comment, so why bother saying it?
