From Australia- it was on lots of dresses ( over 13) from local designers who are thrilled with the resulting publicity. Our head dude ( Prime minister ) just gave all the oldies $1200.00 and all the Mums with kids under 18, $1000.00 per kid and urged us to spend as our duty.

Designer kids wear just seems so odd to me. And I love clothes but for God's sake, most kids grow so fucking fast and love making messes. I might go the "burlap sack kids wear" route for my own little bean.

@sarah.of.a.lesser.god (and the ovumlord of the rings): I don't understand it either... paying upwards of, say, $20 for something the kid will get dirty/only be able to wear for six months until the next growth spurt makes NO sense to me.

@sarah.of.a.lesser.god (2009: a space ovumlord): We get hand-me-downs from one of Mr. JB's aunts who has a day care in a tony community. Her son wears them first, then they're thirdhand by the time we get them. You wouldn't believe what these people spend money on. My kid has a Columbia winter coat in perfect condition, matching ski pants. He dresses better than I do, and for free.

It's easier with a boy, I have to admit. He looks good in everything, the selection for boys is usually extremely limited, and he doesn't hassle me to buy him a million dresses. The big expenses are shoes, which I get for half of retail at the outlets, and dress clothes, which I try to get secondhand (it's not hard).

I might get stoned (with rocks, not weed) for saying this, but ever since she did that campaign commercial in response to John McCain's "Celebrity" ad, I've thought she was sort of in on the joke, and therefore I can't hate anymore.

So 5 grand on a dress is insane, but without trying, Paris does make a valid point. Yes lots of people have lost their jobs and yes the economy is really bad and more people will lose jobs and more businesses will close down. But not everyone is in totally dire straits. If you have money to spend and want to buy something, there's no reason not to spend it. Saving your money is all well and good and a great idea when losing your job is a high likelihood, but really, that's not an issue for Paris Hilton. I say, good for you Paris, spend that money! Also maybe, spread around a little...I could really use some!

You know, I just caught the tail end of an old Ellen show with Paris on it and they were touring her closet. It was gifuckingnormous. Her shoe closet used to be a gym. There is no reason in the world she should be spending that much money on a dress she's going to wear for 8 hours tops.

It could be that I'm also insanely jealous of her money and what not....but come the fuck on.

@Annabellie: Right there with you. My further complication is that my future mother-in-law had a rather rushed wedding 38 years ago (courtesy of the Vietnam war) and has exceedingly grandiose notions of what constitutes a Proper Wedding Dress.

My parents, on the other hand, brag about reusing teabags.

@Annabellie: I got mine for 150; the least expensive outfit of anyone in the wedding party. 'Course, we made sure to buy all the dresses at the same place (lots of shops will give you a little discount for that), and it was not an especially grand dress, and luckily I fit into the sample size.

@: I got married in an outfit that cost less than 100 dollars. At a courthouse! *GASP* and then we spent all the money we'd saved on the wedding to go on a trip to Indonesia that was basically the highlight of my LIFE. I do not for one second regret not having a typical "church wedding." I just don't see the point in putting on a pageant that no one really wants to go to anyway. Think of what you could be doing with ALL THAT MONEY. I just don't get it.
