I can't see how pageants WOULDN'T lead to emotional problems. You're a small, impressionable child being told that you're only valued for what you look like. It doesn't matter if you're funny or smart or interesting, it matters to fit the standards of conventional beauty.

Another reason why pageants are bad: they teach young women how to apply makeup wrong. Yikes, Brooke. Makeup is not spackle!

Frankly, I don't really care for that much make-up, fake bake, and crazy-ass hair-dos on grown women, let alone PRE-SCHOOLERS. Oh, but it's not about appearance or beauty. No siree. And the sexy strutting of four-year-olds is downright creepy. They are children, and, being female, they will have PLENTY of time to dress-up and act sexy for the patriarchy, if they so choose, when they are grown adult women.

ALSO. It's not about beauty? Even though they're being judged on APPEARANCE? REALLY?!

As they say, "Denial isn't just a river in Egypt."

your name is wood. and you named your kid eden. which sounds an awful lot like "eatin' wood". you also buy her a showgirl outfit. are you trying to set her up for a career in adult entertainment?

Is anyone else a Mr Show/Bob Odenkirk/David Cross fan? Remember the skit about the beauty pageant for fetuses? "Pre-natal-Pretties" Giving your fetus liposuction, plastic surgery, makeup, and a weave. Watching these always makes me wonder what happened to the mothers/fathers as children to make them do this to their kids...

It seems that pageants aesthetics have not changed much in 14 years.

@fluxus flucker: Goodbye college fund! And even if these parents are setting aside money for Eden's education, think of the activities they could spend their money-- and Eden's time-- on instead, like dance or music lessons. You know, cultivating ACTUAL SKILLS AND TALENTS that can provide the child with a real sense of accomplishment and make her more well-rounded as she grows older.

@Ting-a-ling: That's one of my biggest problems with these deals--moms who say it's a "confidence booster." Um, there are so many HEALTHIER ways to do this: dance or music, like you said, or theatre, or even sports. In all of those, the kid gets a real sense of accomplishment and empowerment: "I can DO something, not just stand there and be pretty!"

    A 4-year-old should not have an "arch-rival."

I had an arch-rival at four. We went to the same pre-school, and our parents forced us to play together all the time. I can't remember the name of my "boyfriend" at the time, but I do remember my outrage when she would tell people that he was her boyfriend, (so not true, btw).

Damn you, Anna, I still demand vengeance!
