<![CDATA[Life After Slumdog]]> It has been almost six months since the child stars of Slumdog Millionaire journeyed to Hollywood to attend the Oscars. Since then, their lives have been irreversibly altered, sometimes for the better, others for the worse.

As Emily Wax reports for the Washington Post, Azhar Mohammed Ismaill, 11, has, for the most part, benefited from his recent catapult to fame. His family has moved out of the slums and into a two room apartment in a high-rise building, a gift from Slumdog director Danny Boyle, who Azhar's co-star Rubina Ali calls "Uncle Danny."

But even post-Slumdog, Azhar's life has not been all that easy. In May, the government bulldozed the illegal shanties that housed both Rubina and Azhar, as well as countless other families. Azhar's father was hospitalized around the same time with tuberculosis, while Azhar was reduced to living on the streets, sleeping under a tarp. Ziyan Contractor, a teacher at the children's school, says this is normal for kids in the slums. "Nearly every child from the slums has had their home bulldozed and has a parent who has a drinking or gambling problem or has walked out," she told the Post. "Every single scene of that movie was true. The only scene that wasn't true was when they dance on the train platform at the end. There is no space to dance on the platforms of Mumbai: only a crush of people."

In a sense, Azhar's rise out of the slums and into the once-unattainable world of middle-class life is emblematic of the increasing social mobility that has hit India like a tsunami. Wax explains,

In many ways, they are experiencing at warp speed the masala of euphoria and turmoil that India's vast poor feel as they emerge from the iron bonds of caste and class to an era of genuine social mobility.

Over two decades, India has awakened from a drowsy agricultural nation and into an industrial one that has lifted millions out of poverty. Rapid urbanization and the opening of markets has broken down feudal village roles and inspired young Indians to grab hold of new destinies in cities far from their birthplaces. Mumbai has become a magnet for a new generation of Indians, a New York of India, where professions are no longer inherited, where hundreds sleep on the street for a chance at a better life.

But out of the two children, Azhar is the luckier one. Rubina may be famous, but whether or not she has been granted a "better life" is arguable. Although Boyle has offered to buy Rubina's family an apartment like Azhar's, her father has refused. He says he does not want to live anywhere but the Bandra neighborhood because all of his work contacts are located there. She frequently misses school to shoot commercials or fashion shows. Her teachers say they are worried about her, but her father and stepmother refuse to come by the school and speak with them. These problems pale in comparison to the highly-publicized undercover sting by a British Newspaper, when Rubina's father was caught tried to sell her for the equivalent of $290,000.

And yet Rubina remains cheerfully optimistic about her new life. She seems to enjoy the visitors and the attention she receives (Wax even calls her a "mini-diva"). "I think back to what my life was like before the movie," she said. "No one ever asked who I was or what I thought about anything."

<![CDATA[The Trouble With Lindsay]]> Oh, dear. Lindsay Lohan has reportedly been tweeting the demise of her relationship with Samantha Ronson, calling her a "cheat" who needs to "stop doing drugs." Ronson has reportedly locked Lohan out of her home.

Lohan has reportedly been sending such tweets as "@jackdaniels9 look, im doing this publicly because u&ur friends call people mag..so-you win, you broke my heart. now go away. i loved you" and "@jackdaniels9 ask ur sister 2 stop yelling profanity plz;;stop doing drugs. and tell charlotte to do more-she could loose a stone or 10" to Ronson, according to a source who leaked the locked tweets to Perez Hilton. If it's true, it wouldn't be surprising; Lohan is now officially known more for her wacky antics than her acting, and is a celebrity in the vein of Paris Hilton: someone who is simply famous for being famous. It's sad in that Lohan is talented, as anyone who watched Mean Girls could tell you, but at this point keeping up with her exploits has become exhausting: how many chances will she get before the entire universe gives up and moves on?

There is something strange about our fascination with Lohan, who hasn't made a decent film in years: one wonders if we are more interested in her demise than in her potential recovery: yet another child star swallowed by the messy system. Perhaps it's because we recognize Lohan's talent, or sympathize with her insane family situation (can you imagine having "White Oprah" as your mother and a father who just blogs about you for publicity all day?) But the cycle of "Lindsay hits bottom, Lindsay's back on track, Lindsay hits bottom, again" just keeps on going. To drop some lyrics: "It's not getting better, man, it's just getting old."

In any case, I can't help but pull for her, want her to pull her shit together. But no amount of public fascination or sympathy is going to do that for her. If Lohan wants her career back (what's left of it) she needs to do it on her own. And with leaks from "friends" allowing her private Twitter account to be displayed on gossip pages, it might be time to cut ties with those who don't necessarily have her best interests at heart. Whether or not Lohan's career will bounce back is yet to be seen, but it might already be too late: perhaps the most telling comment of all comes from a Perez Hilton commenter, of all people, who notes: "Neither are celebrities so why are they on this site??"

<![CDATA[Living Lohan: Kids Grow Up Fast When You Put Them To Work In Vegas]]> It's interesting to hear people who know the Lohans — but who aren't the Lohans — talk about the Lohans. On last night's episode of Living Lohan, Ali was supposed to go in the studio with Jeremy, the sleazy, self-promoting hip hop producer who exploited a "relationship" he was having with Lindsay to get some attention from the press. Jeremy was having a discussion with Ali's vocal coach about Ali's work ethic and the two agreed that even though Ali is 14, she seems 27. And they think this is a good thing! Clip above.

<![CDATA[Is Ali Lohan's Dream Really A Nightmare?]]> Whenever stage moms or dads defend their decision to put their children in show business, they always say, "My kid has talent, I'm just helping him/her follow a dream. It's his/her choice." The kids in question memorize the defense and repeat it to anyone who asks — as is the case of Ali Lohan. Sure, Ali probably wants to be a famous singer. A lot of young girls do. But when it comes down to doing the work involved, being pressured with perfection, and missing out on fun kid's stuff, it became clear to us on last night's episode of Living Lohan, that Ali's not so much following a dream but rather, being dragged into it.

<![CDATA[Stage Mother Is Clearly The Star Of I Know My Kid's A Star]]> I Know My Kid's a Star is an elimination-based reality show consisting of teams of wannabe child stars and their stage parents. It might just be the most brilliant idea: Dashing the dreams of parents living vicariously through their children. All the people on the show are so over-the-top, so the fact that an Alexis Arquette-ish single mom named Rocky is like double the personality of anyone else is really saying something. She uses the word "frig," asks if her tampon string is hanging down from her skirt, and tells her daughter repeatedly that she needs to perform well so that they can buy a big house. She is instantly the breakout star of the show, which is probably the only way that she would have it. Clip above.

<![CDATA[The Enids & Rebeccas Of The World Will Miss You Most Of All, Brad Renfro]]>
If I had a "type," Brad Renfro would have been it. Especially looking at his mugshot. He's so hot in it. And in Larry Clark's Bully, too, in which he's pretty much shirtless the whole time. I can't say I was shocked when I learned he was found dead this week at age 25 — he's had a pretty public battle with drug addiction, and a whole slew of run-ins with the law (the best one being when he tried to steal a yacht in 2000, but was too wasted to remember to untie it from the dock, so he couldn't sail away). Anyway, it's nice that the media in general have recognized that he was way more talented and troubled beyond the stereotypical child-star syndrome. And Jezebel received so many emails from readers regarding his death — I had no idea that so many people cared so much about him. Sadly, he probably didn't either. Anyway, above is a clip from Ghost World, in which he plays the quintessential crush/whipping boy to his girl friends. R.I.P., man.

<![CDATA[Puberty Ruined The Culkin Boys For Us]]> The Culkin brothers were such cute little boys, but unfortunately, the transition into adulthood hasn't been as visually pleasing. Where did it all go wrong? A rough time line has been created to "capture the pubertal repression of the cute gene" of the Culkin family. In the top row is big brother Macaulay, 26, then Kieran (the one from Igby Goes Down ) who's now 24, and Rory (the one from Signs) who just turned 18 last month. We're thinking lil' Rory has fared the best.
