As sad as that is, her mother probably thought that she'd have a better life as a caretaker over here.

Either way, poor girl, and I'm glad she's out now. And what's with her parents letting her come over? Did they think that was better than the shame of debt?

I see a Detective Benson in the making. Here's hoping she takes this tragedy and makes the most of the opportunity she will be given.

"After nearly two years in a U.S. prison cell, she's living once more in the spacious apartment where Shyima first worked as her maid. The apartment is adorned in the style of a Louis XIV palace, with ornately carved settees, gold-leaf vases and life-sized portraits of her and her husband.
She did not agree to be interviewed for this story.
Before the door closed behind her, a little girl slipped in carrying grocery bags. She wore a shabby T-shirt. Her small feet slapped the floor in loose flip-flops. Her eyes were trained on the ground.
She looked to be around 9 years old."

When I was in Nepal, we stayed at an inn while trekking in the Himalayas. It was nicer/higher-end than others we'd stayed at (but still quite basic, i.e. no hot water, indoor toilets, or electricity), and at dinner there was about a 10 year old girl helping with the serving. It was clear she was an employee, notthe innkeeper's daughter, and she worked her tail off. She practically ran from table kitchen over and over, and the entire time seemed thrilled and quite happy to be doing it. The innkeeper never seemed anything but nice to her (though granted this was in our presence, who knows about behind doors), but she worked *so* hard, and had almost a desparate eagerness to please to her efforts. All I could think about was if she was so thrilled to be working there, what was it like where she had come from?

For context, 27 million is about three times the population of New York City. It's nearly four times the population of the state of Israel.

That seems like it wouldn't even cover what they owe for backpay/taxes etc....not to mention taking away her freedom, childhood, education etc.
