The lower classes will always have to pinch and scrape for those who have a great deal more money and time than they know what to do with. If you're a poor governess in the 1800s, you have to make a dollhouse for rich people. If you're a poor slob in the 2000s, you have to try to pay your rent despite a lot of rich people doing unimaginably stupid things with credit derivatives.

    Same thing, right? Right?

Only £8000? It's more than I have in the bank, but I'm seriously tempted. Can you take out a doll-sized mortgage on a dollshouse?

I would have made a terrible governess given my proclivity to cut the hair off of every doll that has ever crossed my path.

Oh wow. I was obsessed with dollhouses as a child. When I was about eleven my father decided to make me one from scratch. It took him a year but he constructed me a pink and purple townhouse outfitted with electricity and a porch. As a little girl I was obsessed with living in a pink and purple house, hence the color scheme (although I give him props for making the colors a lot more solid and understated than my original desires). It is one of my most prized possessions, most significantly because he constructed just for me.

@ekaterinaballerina: My grandfather made my dollhouse I had when I was very young- it had a folding roof for the third floor and I could do with it what I pleased. I also had a really cute little cottage from a kit and then later my mom bought me a new dollhouse to replace the one from my grandpa(it broke! :() and I got to customize that one too.

I may have been slightly obsessed as a child and STILL want to make one now that is perfect.

@bluebears: I agree with funnyface. It's a very cool museum. It's the parsonage that her father worked from. My extended family all live in North Yorkshire and we always make a pilgrimage whenever I visit. The best displays are the dresses of Emily and Charlotte. TINY! Like what a 12 year old would fit into today.

@PrairieGirl: I got to go on a college trip, and we stayed in a tiny b&b/tea house across the street from the church: [www.theapothecaryguesthouse.co.uk]
