@Ms Meghan: I have read some things - that are probably wild speculation - relating this to the fact that Dion is Roman Catholic.

Whatever happened it must be really hard t go through something like that in the public eye. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't want my personal business to be public knowledge. I have no problem with her not telling the world what happened if it is difficult for her.

In the UK women don't tend to tell everyone else they are pregnant until after 12 weeks. I know my family and friends in the US all tell about pregnancies almost right away. I personally always thought "Why not tell everyone right away? You might need support etc anyway if you have a miscarriage." Thinking now about the fact that you might have to make a decision to terminate or not if there were problems and might not want to share that with others makes me re-think this though.

@Kivrin: I did not like this holiday album at all. Knowing that she is not religious, it really sounds to me (including the arrangements) like a marketing ploy to make money off Christmas. Like what Bob Dylan did.

Having said that, "American Doll Posse" completely ROCKS. Give it a listen.

A lot of her music has been about deconstructing or reclaiming the feminine from religious misogyny. Christmas, at this point, can be fairly secular. And since it's based on a Pagan holiday, I think it's fair game. I

@hildy: I'm absolutely referring to Midwinter Graces, though Abnormally Attracted to Sin is a turd too. (Posse Bonus is maybe the first song of hers that actually made me angry.) I called it pap because it's terrible. And I love Tori. But she needs two things: 1. an editor and 2. an editor. @tiredfairy: Yes, I understand the pagan feminist context of a lot of her music - I've loved Tori since I was 14. I'm just tired of her Stevie Nicks-lite schtick. Ophelia and Original Sinsuality (typing that makes me want to punch a panda) actively embarrass me when they come up in a shuffle. And ok, so she didn't put Have a Holly Jolly Date Rape on the Christmas album, but you can't convince me that Pink and Glitter is a stirring indictment of holiday sexism. I stand by my comment. It's treacle, and it's terrible. And maybe the reason that I'm so annoyed by it is that I know she can do better. #marleematlin

@Master.And.Everyone: Seriously, feel me on this. When one has a 6 year old that one desperately tries to avoid total crap with, one needs to look at things with new eyes. Listen with new ears, rather.

As @tiredfairy put it above, would I rather my own little angel warbled along with Tori while deconstructing the winter festivals than twanging out fucking Jingle Bells with Hannah Montana? YOU BET.

It's a lovely album and worth every penny to have some beautiful music and a different conversation during December. #marleematlin

Also, I'd avoid letting your kid listen to any other TA albums, at least until whenever you want to explain what China white is, and why the singer's daddy is a starfucker. But that's the thing - if Tori wants to stop singing about her miscarriages and start making music for children, or idiots (I'm looking at you, Mary Jane) or whatever, I'd appreciate a heads-up so I can stop looking forward to her albums.

In other (less hostile) holiday reccomendations: I don't really like Mariah Carey, but her Christmas album is effing phenomenal. #marleematlin

My parents were tolerant of my desire for kid-pap (my dad interviewed New Kids on the Block for something, and was kind enough to bring me swag, even though I know it killed him), but also really gave my brother and I a background in the fundamentals (and by "fundamentals" I mean 80's New Wave, classic rock, and folk music out the yang.), I seem to have turned out ok.

I think my previous messages came off as crankier than I intended, but I assure you, that ire is entirely directed at Tori Amos. #marleematlin

@GeorgeFayne: That's fine, I didn't say you have to like it. My point was that musicians generally change over time, and I'd rather that than not. Or you get the Rolling Stones, who basically do a caricature of themselves.

Tori's music has shifted over the years, the way her life has. That's always been how she operates. Sometimes you get social relevance, sometimes you get pop, sometimes you just get whatever the hell it is she wants to do. You either go with it or you don't.

Music like hers is always highly, highly, subjective. I'm not questioning your comment or your opinion. Merely pointing out that this was her motivation, you're entitled to dislike the execution.

I view Tori the way I view every creative person whose work I enjoy. It's nearly impossible for them to do something I will like every single time. Everyone has an off day, album, story, screenplay, whatever. If they do something I don't like in terms of style, then I move on. I don't get angry about it because I have far more good albums I enjoy from her than not.

If she ever does an album dedicated to the awesomeness of the patriarchy and tells every woman to start having babies and give up the vote, then I'll get cranky. :} #marleematlin

I'm still trying to figure out how a person could say with a straight face that (mainstream) hip-hop is "very mixed and open" and that Kanye single-handedly achieved this.

But I don't like that celebrities routinely use their fame to sound off on important topics, when regular citizens (like you, for instance) don't get the same bully pulpit. It often seems the only qualification for being an "expert" in anything--whether politics, the economy, global hunger, cures for cancer, or anything else important--is that you appear on "The Hills" or whatever. Yes, Harrelson is more thoughtful and better-informed than most celebutards, but any random Jezebel commentator is probably even more thoughtful and better-informed than he is. That goes without saying. But we, unfortunately, don't have movies to promote.

I disagree that they are all lauded as experts, though. They have a pulpit, but not necessarily the credibility to back it up. (Looking at you, Jenny McCarthy!) In Woody's case, I'm less annoyed than I'd be if say, Sean Penn were spouting off. About anything, however worthy. Woody's always been a crunchy hippie kind of guy, so him being into politics doesn't surprise me.

As long as they're well informed about their issues and not sanctimonious twits, trotting off to co-sign leaders and situations whose implications they don't seem to entirely understand, I'm OK with slebs sounding off on what interests them. It brings visibility, and often donations, to issues that might not be brought to people's notice otherwise. But I could see how that would bug you.
