Oh, wait a minute, I'm confused about what you said there. You are still comparing makeup and headscarves, and completely ignoring the religious reasoning/implications of being deemed a woman who brings shame on her house. Implications that include being stoned to death, or set on fire and burned alive, for example.
You really cannot compare these two things. You can accuse me of not being 'cool'; I'd say you are very young and naive.
@Diziet_Sma: Look, you went and said that the "slippery slope" begins when we let muslim girls wear headscarves to school, no? Let me ask you this: I have a friend. She converted to Islam. She wears a headscarf. Should she be looked down upon for it? Does her husband hit her with rocks when she takes it off for her job in the military? Of course he doesn't. Should I be thinking to myself "Dru is kowtowing and shackling herself"? I don't think that, and I don't think it would be appropriate for me to do so. The general feeling I've gotten from your comments is that you see Islam as being strictly dictated by Wahabbists and Salafists. I don't know what you know exactly about the religion, and while I agree that there is a very anti-woman thread through it, the same can be said of Judaism and Christianity. They all trace their lineage to the old testament. I won't argue that the treatment of women in places like Yemen and Saudi Arabia is anything other than abhorrent; I don't subscribe to "social relativism". I simply don't see any harm in a woman choosing to observe her religion as she sees fit, as long as she's given the choice in the first place.
I don't see how not seeing fit to look down on personal choices of others makes me anything other than "not judgemental about it". And I didn't say you weren't "cool", just that it's not cool to project one's own values on others when they aren't doing anyone any harm. Just to clarify.
The UK is very tolerant of other races, compared to some other places (hello, France!). BUT, the Muslim dentist? THIS is the slippery slope of what happens when one is too tolerant of intolerance. It may make me unpopular here, but I gotta say, it starts when schools change the dress code to allow head scarves.
@Diziet_Sma: And I did mean 'races'; Britain is not inherently Muslim - it may turn out to be majority Muslim in the future, for all I know, but I'm talking about NOW.
@Diziet_Sma: Because one asshole dentist -- who just happens to be Muslim -- is representative of a sliding decline of your predominantly white anglosaxon sensibilities. Let's all blame 11-year-olds in head scarves.
@Diziet_Sma: It's cases like this that make me want to take a bit of a harder line at times. I don't know if the dentist in question is an immigrant, but I do know that many of the islamic crazies in the UK came from Pakistan. Commonwealth country, easy immigration. Now many if not most Pakistanis don't want to put up with that kind of shit in their own country. Now that I'm starting to ramble, my point is that if someone immigrates to a country and tells everyone that they're living their lives wrong, and makes a big thing out of this adopted home being *different*, pissing people off all the merry way, why not just send assholes like that back where they came from? New place, new rules. Learn 'em. Love 'em. Live 'em. That's how the world works.
That said, I have to disagree with the head scarves in the dress code thing.
@heatherwritesstuff: Also, I must own up and say I absolutely HATE IT when I see a Muslim woman in a head scarf; ditto Jewish women in wigs - they are basically condoning the sexist tenants of their religion. I cannot take it, after all the years of women fighting - and dying - for equal rights, it is so disappointing.
@Diziet_Sma: No, it doesn't. Wearing a headscarf is not a big deal. It's a scarf. It isn't behavior. It is a thing. TRYING TO FORCE someone to wear a headscarf, whether or not that person is a muslim, is unaccaptable, and if someone moves to a country where doing so is not only frowned upon but isn't legal, then tries to do exactly that, you 86 the asshole and send them back where they can do that sort of thing. You see the difference?
This confirms my suspicion that cats might actually be dumber than ferrets. And ferrets are nicer. A ferret would not eat your face off when you die. Kitty lovers need an INTERVENTION!
I clicked on the dentist story all pissed, lo and behold the guy's last name is BUTT. I hope he loses his license over the whole flap he's causing, and HA HA HA his name is BUTT.
Ah, that fondly reminds me of the time I got trapped in a closet in Queens while visiting family friends. It was a ghetto ass apartment and people kept painting the frame of the door over and over again. They didn't bother to scrape the old gunk off before repainting. Someone thought it was funny to scare me and close the door shut but it got stuck.
