Well, duh. Everyone knows Holden gets diagnosed with schizophrenia, and spends the remainder of his days in a fifties-style "sanatorium", knocking back Valium and babbling incoherently about how much he hates snowballs, hand-holding and rude graffiti. Even Phoebe can't bear to visit him more than once a year - we don't need a goddamn book about it, fer Chrissakes.
@tscheese: Write this please. You can publish it serially in the weekend OT's. It will be the finest book ever published in small white boxes on a pale blue background.
Actually, I read about this--and it doesn't sound like a sequel at all to me. I think the main problem was that they're advertising it as a sequel.
From the NYT article I read about it, it sounded like more of a dialog between the author and Salinger's work, and a hypothetical dialog between Salinger and Holden Caufield. I'm surprised that it was found "problematic."
@BlackFrancine: The judge based the ruling on the author's own statements and the book jacket, both of which often referred to it as a "sequel." The judge took them at their word. Also, the judge read both books and found that there were a lot of similarities - that the author borrowed more than he had to for his "transformative" purpose.
@dianersb was bit by a zombie: Slightly Off thread topic, I have never read any of those, but I'm intrigued, esp. the ones of Sanditon (the book that she left unfinished) any comments or recommendations?
@Ailatan: Sandition is interesting, but more biting and less funny than her earlier novels. I recommend reading it more for historical interest than for pleasure.
If J.D. Salinger testifies in open court, that will be The. Biggest. Deal. Ever. Anyone want to bet over/under the number of "Style"/"Life" section journalists who simultaneously wet themselves?
60 years later? A major part of Salinger's appeal (to me, at least) is the youth of his characters. I do not want to meet old Holden. This is a fucking awful idea.
@rocknrollunicorn: I'm with you. I was recently talking with a friend about how Catcher was the seminal YA novel. The only thing YA books have in common, it seems to me, is a teenage protagonist. They're about growing up, not growing old. I'd hate to see Catcher ruined this way.
@lilbobbytables: Elton John's production company is working on a movie that starts out like Pride and Prejudice and then aliens attack and start killing people. I'm not kidding.
