I must be on crack on something, because I could have sworn I'd read about gorillas killing and eating animals in the wild. Maybe I'm thinking of a different type of ape. Orangutan? Chimpanzee?

@tiger: Chimps do for sure. They kill other animals and eat them. Sometimes males kill the babies. And they kill males from other troops.

There are good zoos, and there are bad zoos.

Here is the dilemma. So much of these magnificent creatures' habitat is being destroyed. So if we don't keep them in zoos, we lose them altogether.

I wish there was another way to do this.

The Bronx Zoo is beautiful. It's gone out of it's way to, in many cases, try to make a natural-habitat-as-possible for the gorillas. In the gorilla exhibit, you walk through a glass tube down the center of the display, and the gorillas in this wide open space.

It's not great. But what are we supposed to do?

Yesterday I went to see Bokito, the Rotterdam zoo silverback, who was hand raised by humans and thus demands human women who make contact with him to submit and become part of his harem. One cooky lady who went to see him 4 times a week and made intense eye contact learned the hard way when he jumped the fence and pummeled her within an inch of her life.

Anyway, Bokito's bitch please face is something we can only aspire to. It sent chills down my spine.

I don't know about gorillas, but other primates occasionally hunt and eat meat in the wild. Maybe the zoo diet is missing some nutritional component that they try to get from meat?

I wonder if gorillas aren't getting the nutrients they need from their zoo diet, or if something in their diet is whacking out their hormones.

Sort of OT, but I once saw a squirrel grab a praying mantis and wolf it down like a candy bar. It was quite disturbing.

I generally don't approve of zoos for this reason. Most animals shouldn't be kept in cages, and to do so just for our entertainment is fucked up.

(Am I a bad person for secretly being a little satisfied when that tiger in San Francisco escaped from its enclosure and killed the guy taunting it? As Neko Case says, never turn your back on mother earth.)

@mayfly: There are tons of stories about people doing stupid shit at zoos and getting maimed/killed for it.

The polar bears are the biggest maimers, because people think they can pet them. They stick their arm in the enclosure, and *yoink* good-bye arm!

I blame those Coca-Cola ads.

@bangers: Ugh. That's how it always seems animals look at the zoo, to me. The elephants at the San Antonio Zoo (my hometown zoo) always looked so miserable that it made me want to cry. The withering heat in the summer was probably just as unbearable for them as it was for us, and their cages were so bare and sad. The jaguar would be screaming, and it always seemed like it was screaming to be set free. That may just be normal behavior, but that's what I read into it because I can't stand seeing magnificent animals in tiny fucking cages. I fucking HATE the zoo. I can't even express how much.

@Caitfish: warning: i'm about to seriously dork out ok, so I play Zoo Tycoon on my little sister's computer a lot when I go home to visit the family and one thing that has always struck me about real zoos is that in the game, you have to give these animals SO MUCH SPACE and all kinds of cool flora and fauna to keep them optimally happy and win awards and stuff. but then when I go to the real-world zoo and see exhibits like twenty flamingos in a fenced off area literally half the size of my dorm room, I just get CONFUSED!! Why aren't they trying to maximize the animals' happiness and win zoo awards and stuff?

I eat wildlife but its usually only because I bike to work and the darn bugs seem to love the smell of my lipgloss.

With the cost of protien going up I cant complain too much I suppose.

As much as I enjoy the zoo... I can't get with gorillas and other animals in held in captivity and deprived of their natural instincts.

Side note: Chicago just lost TWO animals in zoos... Kipper the chimp in Lincoln Park and Alpha the gorilla in Brookfield.

@EKane: Again!! I lived in Lincoln Park right near the zoo a few years ago and in '04 or '05 they lost a number of animals -- including an elephant. It was awful.

It is for this reason I don't like zoos much. The only zoo I can really get behind is the tiny one in my hometown that takes animals that can't survive in the wild, like coyotes that got caught and badly injured in traps or orphaned mountain lions. They use the animals to educate the public about the native species in the area, and strive to make the habitats as natural and comfortable as possible.
