Camille Paglia is and always has been a frothing-at-the-mouth misogynist, and any woman who thinks she's not is nursing some of the same tendencies. She's a fucking idiot who should have faded into obscurity as the answer on a Trivial Pursuit card a long, long time ago.
I made the mistake of watching Greta Van Sustren's interview with Palin last night and I have to say she is likable. But here is where I think Democrats and Republicans differ. Just because she is likable does not mean she would be a good political leader. I think personally she is a role model for women and her conversation last night where she said that once she was working within govt Todd picked up the "domestic" duties was refreshing, especially for a Conservative Christian. But none of these things make a person a good President. Obama is the first likable Dem candidate in awhile but we elected him for his ideas. I hate the fact that the media is missing the argument - I dont hate her because she is pro-life, I dislike her because she is not qualified for the job she was seeking. THAT IS ALL!
@ArtfulSlingerBARACKED THE VOTE: And that being said, while I appreciate all the work that McCain has done for the country, I do not believe he had what it took to be President either.
She is literally, the definition of a female chauvinist pig. What entertains me is that things she says would be called sexist and not taken seriously if a man wrote them, but because she has a vagina and hates women, she's an "iconoclast." Disgusting.
Paglia only seems to care about women being powerful when they fit her narrow definition of "attractive." When they get "too old" like Maddonna, she throws them aside. How old is Paglia now?
@mocksun: Yeah, that's another thing -- can we all agree that, unintelligent as she may or may not be, playing up her folksy "you betcha" down home crap is utterly insulting?
i kant wayt untyl ai run for preseedent and den everyoane will lov mee becuz i iz a woomahn that can doo stuffz and den also, may brein but mostli ai hav a how do yoo sai? bajina and i herd dat uen yoo hav one of dis den you kan doo uatever yoo uant also.
The King's English? Nice straw man there. None of us speak it, and we haven't had a king to set standards of English diction in some time now anyhow. What I do expect is that someone who might be President can speak intelligently, in specifics, addressing questions knowledgeably and succinctly, with a minimum of asinine winking, and as though she (eventually) graduated from college (at a bare minimum). Someone I'm going to elect to represent me had better do it in a way that actually represents me, and I would be mortified to come off that uneducated and ditzy before a national audience.
@bowleserised: Oh, I just said the same thing above. And where I'm from we speak Queen's English, but that has more to do with our spelling than whatever Paglia seems to be implying it does. It's not as though our outgoing Prime Minister or Prime Minister-elect have particularly plummy accents, either. But they got the job on account of their intellect and experience. Not their looks or pandering far-Right appeal.
@bowleserised: HAHAHAHA don't you get it, it's patronizing to switch to the "Queen"'s English! Paglia believes women should not be coddled in this way! She's so ground-breaking!
@PilgrimSoul: Yes! All the namby-pampy white middle class feminists should know real struggle, just like Camille. She knows what it's like for women in Rwanda and so does Sarah Palin!
If I couldn't "speak the King's English," it wouldn't matter if there was a "powerful clarity of consciousness" in my eyes -- I still wouldn't have a job.
@MGB: Word. And can it be acknowledged that if Obama declined to speak the "King's Enlgish," and instead relied on colloquialisms and slang typically associated with African Americans, he would have been absolutely crucified. And, in fact, by and large NO African American would be able to secure a job requiring a degree if s/he spoke like
... if s/he spoke in ebonics or in any way that even remotely resembled the manner of speaking white folks associate with rappers and pro athletes. I see absolutely no reason why Palin (and Bush) should get a free pass.
Whenever I read anything by or about Camille Paglia, I can only think of Julie Burchill's words:
Dear Professor Paglia, fuck off you crazy old dyke.
(Apologies for the language - I'm not so down with the hatespeak, but it really does sum up the bird I want to flip Paglia every time she has a thought.)
Can we stop pretending that an ability to communicate in an eloquent and clear and, yes, somewhat formal manner is not important? Because it is. Let's not become a nation of text-style speech and idiocy, please. The leaders and populations of other countries might actually judge us on the way we present ourselves, Paglia.
@rocknrollunicorn: For serious! One of Olbermann's worst persons in the world last night was some moron Representative or someone who said Bush was a more eloquent and better speaker than Obama. I mean, WHAT? "Our childrens are learning?" "They misunderestimated me?" Why would we want the mouthpiece of America to speak like an 8th-grade dropout? It's one thing to speak colloquially among friends in a casual setting, and another thing entirely to speak that way publicly.
@TheJerseyDevil: My dad has this theory that Camille Paglia is just fucking with us all, and that now she just says shit to see if she can still get away with it.
Maybe Palin is a feminist and represents a brand new feminism. I'll give you that for the purposes of this argument, even though I threw up a little in my mouth while typing that sentence.
But what's wrong with demanding higher standards from my elected officials? What's wrong with demanding that they have strong records of support for their positions? What's wrong with demanding that a governor speak correct English? What's wrong with demanding clarity of consciousness in speak and action and not just "in their eyes?"
Is feminism really accepting sub-standard candidates with piss-poor records on the basis of their looks and lack of purported "elitism?"
Moreover, as one of those big city "elites" who grew up in Middle America and the Southland, we are all Americans. Quit hyping the small town aesthetic like it's something special because you know what? You shouldn't get extra credit for being born in one part of the nation than another, just as you shouldn't get extra credit for being an inexperienced, inarticulate, underqualified candidate just because you're a woman.
@amenfro: Word. To paraphrase Jon Stewart, New York City is just a small town squeezed into a single apartment building. It never fails to disgust me that politicians dare to pick and choose who qualifies as "authentically American" for their own selfish purposes. That strikes me as incredibly un-American. Diversity and dissent are this nation's two best assets.
