My Confirmation sponsor got pulled over for a DUI on her way home from the church. They let her off with a warning when she said where she was coming from. True story. Sign of failed catholic future for me? Seems so.

This was on the news here... they were on their way from the ceremony to the reception.

a) How much did you have to drink to say "I do"?

b) No one offered to be your DD? I get that not everyone can afford a limo, but can't someone in the wedding party help out?

I feel bad for them. I really do. It had been all over the news that it was going to be a "no breathalyzer refusal" weekend, and that cops were going to be out all over the place. I'm sure it was humiliating. Maybe next time they'll plan better. Or call a cab...

A DUI as a wedding present is just a lovely idea but how do you wrap it? /sarcasm/

I was at a conference at a posh hotel in Palm Springs a few years back where there was a wedding. We saw the party arrive in their finery at the beginning of the night on our way out for dinner. Later when we were headed back to our rooms, the bride was screaming like a lunatic, there were two police officers restraining guys in tuxes, and various other people hollering. That's one heck of a wedding. What a way to start your married life.

@Sister Jukebox: A friend of mine was in a wedding for a girl she didn't know. The bride was a co-worker-friend of one of her friends and didn't have enough friends to be in her own party to match her husband's to be groomsmen- all 3 of them. Anyway, during the wedding reception (where everyone toasted the happy couple with Budweisers in Coozis stamped with "Sue and John 12/3/03" or whatever), the groom went and smoked a joint with one of his friends and she went ballistic, called her ex-boyfriend, and left the reception screaming that she wanted a divorce before she roared off on the back of the ex's Harley.

I think she checked her dignity when she got wasted and got up in a cops face...thus making pointing and laughing at her is fair game. Seriously. It's not like they made her strip or anything. They pointed and laughed at a stupid woman and her stupid husband who broke the law on their wedding day. Next time she should drink less...

@JinxyMcDeath: I don't know...it is the officers' word over hers that she was unruly. Just looking at the wrong cop sideways can get you a quick ticket to the clink. Yes, her husband should NOT have been driving, but we really don't know what she did. She could have just looked trashed to get that charge, it sounds like.

@JinxyMcDeath: We read enough stories on here and in the general media about police routinely falsifying reports and having an anything goes attitude, so I think that unless you have video, BAC results or other substantial data it's all just speculation and your word against a police officer's (guess who'll win that one).

And I say this as a prior criminal defense attorney...police fuck up...but we shouldn't ASSUME they did.

Jade,

I know you're mad, but you have to admit -- it was your fault for being there in the first place. You let your new husband drive drunk, and you gave the cops a hard time. Admittedly, the cops should not have humiliated you in jail, but a couple of better decisions and that never would have happened.

A bad omen? I am guessing this was just another night for these two. Who gets shit faced at YOUR OWN WEDDING!? How incredibly disrespectful to your family, friends, and wedding party members, many of whom spent a great deal of money to share this special day with you. Way to treat it special.

And yes, I am being judgemental, because I am wearing my judgy pants today, ant they feel fine.

I was pulled over for DWI when I was 18 and after I was talking to the original cop suddenly three other cop cars showed up. They all just kinda gathered around watching for some reason? Anyways, a couple of them were laughing because I was visibly crying. I was 18! God! What do you expect me to do?

@bdangles does not fempute: And not to mention the poor thing then had to attempt to urinate in that dress in a probably open-to-all-jailers'-eyes cell (there is usually just a can in a corner - if you don't make a quick cell posse to block you, you are peeing for EVERYONE to see. And if anyone here has ever been a bridesmaid, you KNOW the bride needs help hiking up the dress to pee.

@hortense: Still, I would be more embarrassed to have landed myself in there on my wedding night than by any guffaws directed my way by jailers.I mean, we're all reading about it and laughing, so I'm sure the jail employees had the same reaction. Or maybe I'm just jaded to this stuff by having an entire family employed in various part of the legal and criminal justice system. Pointing and laughing, while not professional, is not exactly abusive. And as she was in a public place, taking a photo was fair game. Arrests are not private matters like, for example, health care - they go into public record.
