JASON: Good points on torture, except we should not assume that our anti-torture stance will make our soldiers less likely to receive those same tactics.

The value is information, receiving more non-violent surrenders, and the moral high ground. Our friends on the other side of the guns could care less, if they capture US Servicemen . . .

I like C-Schlo and all, but the dynasty-happy nature of this country makes me feel all hot and bothered, in a bad way. Bushes, Clintons, Kennedys, Morans, etc., etc. It seems to go against the whole idea of a meritocracy, which is largely why Obama seems to have been elected. Did we ever have a meritocracy or am I hallucinating?

@thesoundandthejury: But part of the US legacy has as much to do with dynasties as it does with random upstarts. Dont you think it has balanced itself out pretty well for the most part. You have some people who belong to political families and you have others who just rise from their own boot straps. When both end up being great leaders both should be respected. Or do we run the risk of discrediting people JUST becuz they come from political families. If Chelsea should run I will gladly welcome her. She is a smart and capable girl. The fact that her dad was a president and her mom senator, and SOS does not deny her the right to seek a life in politics. Sigh. I just hate the whole ANTI dynasty movement. I know BUSH has made us hate the idea but things could be a lot worse.

We get it people. You dislike Caroline Kennedy. You do not think she is qualified not fit for public office. She needs to RUN and BE ELECTED. Her father being President does not qualify her. Nor does her years of work for Education. Her Juris Doctorate. Her NOTHING!

You people really know how to take make people who support her feel bad.

I mean it won't be the end of the world if she gets the seat.

@Flowers For Algernon: Political dynasties help win seats but are an affront to many Americans' democratic sensibilities. If a political legacy can prove him/herself by developing policy chops, that person will earn the people's respect.

A number of smaller-but-respected names (Nita Lowey) have pulled themselves out of the running, so would New Yorkers rather have Kennedy or Andrew Cuomo? Or the governor could surprise everyone and appoint a Republican like Rep. Peter King (who has expressed an interest in the seat). Is that really better than Kennedy?

@ManicPixiePoliticalGirl: I'm really surprised at some of the dislike for Caroline that I've seen here. First of all, she lost her dad when she was 6, and as somebody who lost her dad at 14, I can tell you that is enough suffering that anyone should have to experience. But wait, there's more -- she's lost her uncle, aunts, her mom, her brother, SIL, and several cousins, too.

Despite all that, she is an author, has a law degree, raised three children, has worked to help the NYC school system, raised millions of dollars for the arts in NY state, directed the Profiles in Courage awards and been a really useful public citizen. She's gracious and self-effacing and the farthest thing from a publicity hound. Anyone who has ever met her respects her. And this is bad?

@ManicPixiePoliticalGirl: I think if I were choosing I would pick Andrew Cuomo. Still a dynasty, but he's attorney general now.

I understand the "fundraising" logic sports star mentioned above, and I want Paterson elected, but this seems like bad logic for new yorkers.

I would absolutely love to see Terry McAuliffe as governor of Virginia. He's a really cool guy too. I met him in person when I was 17. We took a picture together. It was on the DNC website, and I was like, super-proud of it and showing everyone I knew.

@ManicPixiePoliticalGirl: Creigh Deeds and Brian Moran have been campaigning for almost 2 years, and have FAR more clout in the rest of Virginia that McAuliffe, who basically only has any recognition in Northern VA. Just because of that, and because of funding, McCauliffe has a shot at winning the primary, but he has a slim-to-none chance at actually winning the general election.

@pantsless economist: The thing is, Warner is not only GREAT at spending lots of time campaigning and meeting voters in rural areas, which is essentially how he won, but he didn't have the Hillary connection, which I think will hurt McAuliffe, sadly. Tim Kaine got help getting elected by riding Warner's Coattail's and with the help of the general tide going towards democrats during Bush's 2nd term. McAuliffe would have have to run one HELL of a campaign to be elected.

@vamusical: @vamusical: I might be way too optimistic, but I think he is electable in Virginia. Since the early part of 2000, it's kind of been one more Republican losing after another, and it's not just that they voted for Obama, i think it's more telling that the majority of Va's Congressional delegation is blue and we've had 2 very successful Dem governors in a row. (and if someone had told me in 2000 what 2008 would look like, i'd probably would have asked for some of whatever they were smoking.) I shall call it the Mark Warner effect. Alot of the Dems that have gotten elected are pretty moderate, but I think with their support McAuliffe could definitely win.
