my son is just over a week old and today we went out and i had to feed him in the car. i felt so weird about it but it sure does beat breastfeeding on a toilet

Where in the UK do these people live? I can't get the article to open. In Scotland it is legal for you to breastfeed ANYWHERE you are legally allowed to be anyway. If anybody ever said anything to me I wouldn't take that crap, the law in on my side. Also, I'm not a member of LLL or the NCT but both of them love it when someone contacts them about something like this. They make a huge deal of it in the media. I'd be on the phone to the cops and then the LLL before you cold say "nipple".

(BTW, I've breastfed three kids for a couple years each and I have never had any trouble anywhere. Most people wouldn't even know I was breastfeeding. I personally feel those giant tarp contraptions do more to call attention to you than anything else. Also, many babies do not like their heads covered when they are nursing so that is a big FAIL.)

I thought I would have an issue with "whipping it out," but after being in labor for days and having all kinds of young men come in and look at my hairy you know what as I tried to get a baby out and only succeeded in pooping on the table, I was a LOT less modest. I find that people did not notice breast feeding if I just did it fast and did not call attention to it (no boob hat here). I even nursed while teaching pre-Calculus and class did not notice (baby was in a Bjorn)/

I used one of the "curtain around the neck" contraptions, and plan to with Kaehokujr3 as well. As much as it is about modesty, it's also because babies get really curious when they are out in public, and I was sick of them stopping to turn around and look when they hear a nois, and there's my boob hanging out, dripping with milk. With the covers, they are easier to keep on the task at hand...

@Faster.Pussycat: Right? Thanks, but I'd rather not have my breasts out in public, nursing or not. And frankly, though I know many other people disagree, I prefer not to see other women's breasts in public. No need to hide in the bathroom or car, but toss a blanket over your shoulder, get the baby a wide-brimmed hat, etc. and everyone - mama, baby and general public - is accommodated. Call me old fashioned, but there you go.

They should have seen me double nursing my twins at the same time. There was no way to do that one in public. One at a time...no problem - just a little blanket to get him latched.

Double nursing would look like a freak show to some people.

I never bothered. I just threw a baby blanket over my shoulder. I had modesty issues. I wasn't concerned about other people.

@bluebirdred: I loved the Hooter Hider I got as a gift. I didn't mind having my tits out, but my husband was worried about pervs, so I almost always used it in public (also, I felt like it made people somewhat less uncomfortable about the fact that I was breastfeeding right next to them - though I kinda wish I'd been more of an in-your-face advocate about it). Anyway, I have a super wiggly baby, so even when he was really young it was tough to keep him covered with just a blanket or burp cloth. The neck strap on the Hooter Hider was key. Until he got to be about 7 months old and learned to just whip it off to the side, of course. But, it got us through the really tough, feeding-every-90-minutes phase, and for that I love it.

Seems like a giant baby boob hat or a contraption like above would draw far more attention than just nursing the babe as is.

I would always be too busy trying to either entertain one twin while I nurse the other, or else make sure I don't drop either of them while I nursed them simultaneously, to notice whether or not anyone was staring. If they did, too damned bad. I'm not about to try to pull off that circus act in a tiny bathroom stall--hard enough doing it when I have enough space and a comfortable chair!

By the time the mini-Zinhas weaned themselves (at about 3.5 years), they weren't really nursing much more than when they woke up and when they went to bed, which was a shame, because it probably would have been much easier in public than when they were infants--they could stand up and get it their damn selves while I sat comfortably. :D

My dad hand-crochets beautiful breast-feed shawls. He does it to relax, people use them to relax, it's the circle of life. he has a store on etsy.com if you are interested...his handle is theblanketguy.

This is not advertising - I hope - please don't disemvowel me - I just wanted to show others that breastfeeding cover-ups can be pretty!

You don't have to breastfeed in public if you don't want to. I did it maybe twice in the 10 months I breastfed, and I do go out with the baby a lot. Now, some babies won't take a bottle, while mine did, so there is that. But there are ways around it, so it sucks if some women really wanted to breastfeed and didn't for that reason.

That said, I think sometimes modesty is just a convenient reason given. Let me be clear - no one needs a reason to not do it - it is their choice and none of anyone's business. But unfortunately, many women who don't BF feel compelled to defend themselves, and I think this is a more socially acceptable reason than simply saying "It wasn't the right choice for us," or "Go fuck yourself, it's none of your business."

@PrarieMuffin: thank you! He's kind of insecure about his work - he's VERY talented and I think a single sale would really boost his confidence. It amazes me that he does this - he sits in his lazy-boy and crochets for hours every night. He made me my first blanket when I was born and I still have it to this day.

I get really annoyed when I hear women are asked to leave a restaurant for feeding their baby. If they don't feed the baby, it will cry and piss everyone off. If they do feed the baby, we can all enjoy our meals (save for the prudes and the pervs).

I think any way a woman chooses to feed (be it topless or covered) should be treated (teated?) properly. It should be ignored.

End of story.

One of the few things I like about my restaurant is that it's friendly to breastfeeding mothers - I've heard a manager chew out another server for making derogatory comments about women breastfeeding their children there.
