    am I the only one that things the whole "selling a magazine and then putting it on the net for free" is a poor business decision?


    i never understood it. i mean, i simply will not buy something if i can get it for free online...no wonder newspapers and magazine are losing revenue.


    heres a thought - do as the NYTimes does: allow a reader to get a limited amt of articles and then stop them from viewing until they pay a subscription! sheesh, this isnt rocket science people.

    @junkyardarts: That model did not work for the Times or the WSJ. Not my fault either, I paid both papers just to support them. I feel really sorry for print dinosaurs and have a certain sentimental fondness. But that's as far as it goes.

    @krismry: I know this isn't print, but for awhile CNN tried charging for their video content and that didn't work either. You could easily get the same information somewhere else.


    We're about to dump our print edition of the Los Angeles Times. We don't read it enough and it's wasteful considering we read all of the news online.

    I think Wintour is right that there is a lot of over-reacting. The scare news pieces about the economy are making things worse by making the consumer too scared to buy and therefore no money is going back into the economy. This needs to stop. Times are hard, but this is not the great depression.

    Seriously, I don't find it offensive that there are luxury goods in a fashion magazine during a recession. It's the accompanying articles that are obnoxious. Also, if the clothes are going to be wildly expensive, they should be really fun to look at and creative. Ideally it should be more interesting that whatever the person in the cubicle next to me is wearing.

    my townhouse on sullivan street is directly across the street from Anna Wintour's townhouse and she still has security in front of the house 24/7. there was an incident a while back where a PETA volunteer splashed red paint all over the front of her house and another time when someone threw an explosive device through her window.


    i dont know if Conde Naste pays for the security. I know Conde Naste was sued by one of Anna's domestic workers for injury suffered when the worker inhaled the fumes from the liquids they used to clear the red paint off her house

    @Lucky in Love: I can only imagine the security she needs. I used to work in the Conde Naste building. PETA protestors galore. I swear it was some people's full-time job to wear Wintour paper masks and sandwich boards declaring fur to be dead. Thanks for sharing your beliefs, but I'm just trying to work here -- and not for a magazine.

    I became a hard core animal rights activists after watching PETA video surveillance of fur farms here and in china (including dog fur farms....where chinese fur farmers skin dogs alive).


    PETA also has a videotape of a cattle slaughterhouse which is sure to make anyone who watches it a vegetarian. I haven't eaten any red meat since watching it.

    @Lucky in Love: I haven't eaten red meat since I was 12, because I don't like it, but I won't ever be a vegetarian - I love fish. I don't wear fur or ever intend to buy it.


    I disagree with many of PETA's tactics, but not the underlying core of a lot of their message. My gripe with the protestors outside my former workplace was the disruptiveness and need/desire to get in your face constantly. If nothing else, they should have moved slightly down the block where there was more tourist traffic, less work-a-day traffic. Let more/different people see their message. And stop jumping in front of walking people. Accident waiting to happen.
