This jumped out at me. I used to do this. Or push food around my plate and chop it into smaller pieces, so it looked like I ate. I had an ED. Not accusing Brad of anything, 'cause I don't know him personally. But this perked my ears up.

I don't rate the guy as an actor and he's never done it for me as a sex object (except when he was all fucked up and bloody in Fight Club; I'm perverted like that), but he increasingly comes across as more intelligent and thoughtful than I ever used to give him credit for. Good on yer, Brad. And extra points for saying "drives me mental" and "discombobulated"!

@gherkinfiend: I honestly think sometimes Americans forget that other countries have different regional accents as well (although I'm aware that Northern Ireland is a country not a region). Obviously an Irish accent isn't uniform throughout the country. In hindsight, his attempt may have been more Republic of Ireland (ha, that reminds me that I have a friend that insists on calling it just that) and less Northern Ireland.

I think most decent actors can do standard (received) accents without a problem, but regional dialects are difficult for *everyone* -- I get a bit ticked off at the assertion some that Americans are "bad" at accents and Brits/Aussies are "good" at them. Toni Collette's accent in The Sixth Sense was horrific because she was supposed to be working-class Philly and sounded like working-class Brooklyn. Dominic West? Sexy voice, but not one that arose anywhere near Fells Point.

Newcastle isn't that far from London, and Belfast isn't that far from Dublin: distance doesn't matter when it comes to dialect. Boston, New York, New Jersey, Long Island, Philadelphia, Baltimore -- all reachable within a couple of hours, all VERY different dialects.

@Shotrock: I agree! It riles my mother up that there are so many British actors on American TV these days (I hear its because they are cheaper..) and there are many of them that do horrible American accents. Many of them slip up a lot (Anthony LaPaglia on Without a Trace for one). I remember trying to explain regional accents to people I met while living in Russia and they were utterly confused.

I find the conclusion about his family life being "settling" and too "boring" to be presumptuous and misguided. Very much a projection.

I like Brad Pitt and his worldview, and my perceptions of his family life. I'm a family person...it's only as boring and restrictive on your dreams as you allow it to be.

I don't suffer from any restriction (and as a single momI have a lot less resources than they do); I dare say Pitt doesn't seem to be suffering from any either.

I actually really liked The Devil's Own. I thought it was a great movie and he got the Northern Ireland accent down pat.

On a separate note, I read somewhere else that he also claims in this interview that he and Angelina never fight because life is too short to angry with someone you love. Riiiight. Because keeping your feelings, your opinions, and your problems bottled up is completely healthy and the way towards a long-lasting relationship. My parents fight often and they've been married for 35 years. Sometimes fighting is perfectly healthy.

@Anointynointy: Okay, well I dunno know. I just remember an article about the best and worst accent-attempts in Hollywood years ago and it was listed as one of the better. I'm Irish but I not from the Northern part so I can't claim to know for sure.

@ekaterinaballerina: Ah, I'm actually Northern Irish, and Brad's is not the worst I've heard (just re-watched the trailer on YouTube). In fact, I think the award for the Worst Northern Irish accent on film ever may go to Natasha McElhone in the very same movie! But it's definitely not good. In fairness to him however, it's probably one of the hardest accents in the world to do convincingly.
