I was excited for an instant when my eyes fixed on the tub in tubular shape, being more tub shaped than hour glass myself. Then I realised it was tubular as in straight up and down. The time when apple shapes are finally given their moment in the sun cannot come fast enough for me. #bodyshapes
Maybe we should just aspire to not describing ourselves using inanimate objects and fruits as descriptors. (i.e. apple, pear, hourglass, tubes, inverted triangles etc, etc.)
@Ulookinatmyjunk, JOC: we're not referring to "you" as that, just your silouette. I never heard of inverted triangle, was just always easier to say "V" shape.
not trying to start an argument, but its hard to paint a mental picture without some description like this. I have used it only for convenience and never for offense. #bodyshapes
@10pninjas: A body is a body. All of the descriptors sort of give an impression that one may be better than another and that's simply not true. It's a body. Bodies are different for myriad reasons: genetics, exercise and eating habits etc. I think we should probably grow beyond this. If you defy labels than they really won't apply. And the inverted triangle part was a joke. #bodyshapes
@Ulookinatmyjunk, JOC: if the descriptors gave that impression, yes, it would be far from untrue. I've known that enough by my own attractions. I've been attracted to women of many body types including one more masculine then my own, most simply because i love the person more then the body. But if you're describing it just to describe...
its just hard to see that just describing how something looks it hurtful. i mean, sure...point out cellulite, crows feet and other hurtful specifics, that i can understand. But giving a decription of general height, weight, color and build...i think if you found neutral descriptions offensive, you should work on changing them if you can. On the biggest loser, these people are still big but they appreciate every pound lost, they are working to make a difference. But thats only shame on the offended if they take offense to neutral and do nothing about it. People trying to make a difference can still be hurt by malicious words.
my bad on the inverted part. you're still funny, i just wasnt quick enough to catch it. #bodyshapes
Yeah, tell me something I don't know. I find this out anew every time I try to shop for clothes and can only find pants that fit over my rear if I can stuff my four-year-old child into the waistband with me. #bodyshapes
@redqueenmeg: both Gap and Ann Taylor have a 'curvy' fit that helps with that. But, yes, I feel like enlightening someone to the fact that I have hips and a waist and that they are not the same size. #bodyshapes
@banana_grabber: I'll check Gap again after I'm no longer pregnant, but every time I've tried there before, since about 1992, I've found the same waistband problem. :D #bodyshapes
@redqueenmeg: It's a relatively new line. And I just recently got a pair of wide-leg trouser jeans at Goodwill made by Banana Republic that fit like a dream, so you might try there (BR) as well. #bodyshapes
I'm an hourglass, being a 36" 24" 36". I modeled a few years back, and they told me that, if it weren't for the whole "stick models" crisis, I would never have fit the "market". I met a few girls, and sometimes I must admit that it made me feel "wide". Not fat. Wide. I stopped, because I did not want my self-esteem to suffer. I'm sad that those tubular shapes are making some kind of comeback. What makes you a woman is your own natural shape. That's what gives your body its own beauty. Starving yourself to attain a body shape that you naturally do not have is unhealthy. #bodyshapes
@KatrinSedai: Hi. There's kind of a policy around here (it may be unofficial, I can't find the post that spelled it out explicitly), that its not cool to post your measurements. Or anyone else's. #bodyshapes
I'm pretty shocked that the participants wanted 31" hips. I just checked the both the J Crew and Oasis (UK high street brand) charts and the smallest they carry is 35". 31" is literally children's sizes.
I'm not sure these numbers mean anything. If you don't actually know how small 31" hips are, the fact that you want them doesn't necessarily mean anything.
The whole hourglass thing is kind of meaningless unless people are using a tape measure on actual people. Often girls who are pear shaped or top heavy are described as hourglass because it is used to mean attractive and curvy.
I love how much women will attack other women's body types. It seems in every one of these threads, you always get a few stupids who cling onto some "real women have curves" ridiculousness.
I wish people weren't idiots. Or insecure. Whichever it is, it's getting old. #bodyshapes
@femme-bot: I love my curves. But yeah, they don't make me any more or any less of a woman than anyone shaped differently from me. Assigning value judgments in either (or any, really) direction is sort of obnoxious to me. And I get that responses here are rooted in frustration with those value judgments, but turning them back on themselves and judging in another direction really does no good.
@ideas of light: It's especially funny because I'm sure many commenters were outraged by the whole caster semenya drama.
People are hypocrites. They want to yell about how "real women" look, and then will freak out when someone who doesn't fit the media's idea of "real woman" gets gender tested.
Hey Jezebels, you can't have it both ways. #bodyshapes
@femme-bot: It too disheartens me to see that women with hourglass figures seem fit to attack or mock women with tubular figures rather than directing their remarks to the culture that praises one body type & excludes the other. It's not productive & only contributes to the divisiveness. I do not appreciate reading comments that tell me I look like a praying mantis or a hairless child. Be assured, I do not. I am happy with my body & often complimented on my figure.
Let us aspire to not behave like Dr. Suess' star-bellied sneetches. #bodyshapes
I am willing myself to turn into a preying mantis. Thin, tubular body, long skinny arms and legs, gigantic eyes, improbably large head. 21st century hotness! Though at 36 I'll still be too decrepit for those runways. :-( #bodyshapes
Well, as a member of team-tube, I can say that many clothing lines are NOT designed for our body type. Good luck finding a pair of pants that is not too baggy on your small hips while making your waist-that-is-the-same-measurement look large. And any style of dress that's supposed to be cut flowy and fall straight down? I look like a walking rectangle. Awesome. #bodyshapes
@bluetrain84: Ha! See to me, as a member of team hourglass, it seems the complete opposite!
Skirts that if large enough to fit nicely around my hips, have a good 4 inch gap at the waist that just kind of hangs there and looks like crap if I tuck a shirt into it...
Grass is greener, I guess, or we're at extremes of some in-between average that clothes are made in? #bodyshapes
@bluetrain84: @formergr: As someone sort of in between, it seems clothes from the rack will rarely fit properly--no matter the shape of one's body. #bodyshapes
@bluetrain84: ugh. yes. There are 2 brands of jeans that don't do that too me, and all of the others give me muffin top hanging over the top while still managing to be baggy on my butt and hips. HOW?!
And all the empire waisted stuff.... to make matters worse, I have large-ish boobs to go with the rest of me being straight with no curves, so it all hangs like 5 inches away from my actual stomach, making me look pregnant. Not "fat" but actually pregnant. :( #bodyshapes
@mrsdracomalfoy: Are we the same person?? I only own jeans from Express, nowhere else, and empire-waisted shirts/tunics are the bane of my existence. My sister and I call ourselves pancake people because we may look thin from the side, but look like a giant rectangle from the front. #bodyshapes
Modern woman wants hips of less than 31 inches?! That's insane - even a size 0 is 35 inches.
Also, I wonder if our "ideal body" image has changed due to athletics being more common and encouraged amongst women now than in the 50s.
Me, I just want big boobs, a tiny waist, a nice ass, and also, shoulders with striations and calf muscles that could cut glass. That's totes do-able, right? #bodyshapes
@coconanas: Is it odd that I find this comforting? I tried on at least a dozen pairs of jeans this weekend and the only ones that did up comfortably covered my feet entirely! I mean, I couldn't be the only one, right? #bodyshapes
@coconanas: Same. I have a hell of a time buying shirts - if they fit the top I have so much fabric around my waist that it looks like I'm wearing a pillowcase.
Or, if I wear a shirt that fits my boobs but is longer and tight on my hips, it completely hides my waist. #bodyshapes
@Sev: I can't buy button-downs. I have F-cup tits, and every shirt build to accomodate them is like a damn tent by the time it hits my waist. #bodyshapes
@coconanas: I've found a few places that work ... Ann Taylor is good for me for pants, and I've just had to bite the bullet and pay through the nose for Citizens of Humanity jeans. But they fit both my 27-inch waist and 41-inch hips. Places I avoid like the plague = Banana Republic and J. Crew.
When I go buy pants/jeans, I just accept that I may have to try on 20 pairs or so to find the one I like.
BTW, I have totally never gotten the this-or-that body type is in style thing. I have an hourglass body shape no matter what everyone thinks is cool, and I dress it based on what looks good on me, not what's trendy. I will be giving the low-rise skinny jeans a pass, thank you, both because of the "big backyard" and because I'm almost 40. These are the benefits of getting older. #bodyshapes
@WagaMama: Citizens of Humanity jeans are a godsend! Even the Joe's Jeans "Honey" cut (which are supposedly designed for hourglass booties) had a huge gap in the waistband if they actually got over my hips. So yay for COH! #bodyshapes
@NewsBunny: Two words for you my fellow traveller in giant boobiness (I'm an FF): sweater vests. I can't wear a shirt without one because otherwise it gets that horrible strained button's about to pop thing, or else the waist part doesn't fit. I love me a good sweater vest! Plus it makes me look like a girl version of my supervisor, especially when paired with a tweed jacket and a slightly bemused facial expression.
@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: I would think this entire post/comment thread would be a "trigger" (I'm assuming you are referring to ED). I have reviewed the commenting rules, and I'm pretty sure I never saw a "no measurements please" rule stuck in there. (If I'm mistaken, please enlighten me.)
In light of the original comment (having difficulty finding clothes to fit a certain body type), I shared simply to give the commenter a reference as to whether we had a similar enough body type so that my suggestion was even relevant.
I can assure you that I will not be sharing my cup size - no excitement in that area. #bodyshapes
@WagaMama: I don't know whether or not there was ever an established 'rule' regarding this, but it is generally agreed not to share specific measurements on this site/threads, as that is a specific trigger. Commenters have been, and frequently do get disemvowelled for this- thought it might be service-y to give you a heads up in that respect.
And I'm not really interested in your cup size. #bodyshapes
@Vivien Smith-Smythe-Smith: Thanks for the heads-up - I'll clarify that with Hortense. If we're going to try to remove all "triggers" from the website, we should try to be fair to everyone. I'm sure there are recovering alcoholics on this site, yet people discuss drinking wine and there are vodka advertisements. And recovering drug addicts, yet we have "Pot Psychology."
Something that's a relatively innocent discussion to most people could be detrimental to others, I guess. #bodyshapes
so, basically, we continue to want to look like we somehow avoided puberty?
The language used above---"aspire" is funny...really, aspiring to a body shape is an exercise in futility. You can gain/lose weight but you are going to have the body type you were destined to have, just with larger or smaller measurements. Aspiration is useless. #bodyshapes
@lucystrawberry: Tier 2 is the new black: "Aspiration is useless." I picture a deadpan German nihlist putting this on a t-shirt and sitting in stone-faced judgment of others and, madamoiselle, it is a thing of beauty. I also dream of painting this phrase in my child's nursery in fanciful, mural-style writing.
(On a serious note: This. Absolutely.) #bodyshapes
@lucystrawberry: Women who wear under a C cup totes avoided puperty. They aren't real women. If a woman is thin, she doesn't look like a woman!
/extreme sarcasm. #bodyshapes
@lucy: You really want to go there and tell some of us that we look like we "avoided puberty"? Okay, then.
And I think rixatrix may have been on to something when she wondered what the effect of women being increasingly involved in athletics might have on our shapes. I'd love to be curvy and athletic, but when I am working out a lot, or playing sports, I get thin, flatter and strong, and I don't think it's a bad thing. No, you can't completely change your body type, but to say that exercising just makes whatever proportions you have larger or smaller isn't completely accurate. #bodyshapes
@femme-bot: gak. Open mouth, insert foot. I am sorry, I sounded like a real jerk above. Thanks for calling me on it. I will think more carefully next time before I write anything like that. #bodyshapes
@lucystrawberry: Tier 2 is the new black: Hey, guess what! Women (not girls who have not gone through puberty) come in a huge range of sizes and shapes, all of which are entirely normal. #bodyshapes
