America Ferrara's quote really hits home for me. One of my students last spring was such an inspiration--Latina, five years younger than I am, had her first child at 16, now has four kids, is an active duty Army nurse and trying to finish her BSN so she can get her commission. Her husband just went overseas for another tour, and she goes in a year. Her adviser told her to just drop out because there was no way she could do it.

I told her she could, and I believe she will. She's not the best student I ever had, academically, but she's easily the most determined. She's gotten from the streets to a home and family, career and college. That someone told her not to even try to go further just infuriates me.

@TheFormerJuneBronson: That's great that you did that. I didn't face anywhere near that tough of a situation, but I wanted to drop out of law school because I was sick and my dad had terminal cancer. My dean of students single-handedly convinced me to stay and just drop a couple classes, and I'm so glad he did (even if I sometimes hate being a lawyer).

@Maritsa: I realized at the time that I'd actually never had anyone telling me to go further, but I'd had at least one person not to bother trying any more (a professor I thought I respected in grad school). It didn't keep me from going on, but it did make me think less of her. There's absolutely no percentage in telling people not to try. I can't fathom what goes through people's heads. In what universe does "you'll never amount to anything more than this" sound like a good thing to say to someone who's struggling?

@Imjustnotthatintoyou: Considering most people actually struggle to make ends meet, and the fact that she is a person in the public eye, people can - and do - comment on how she makes her money. It's not snarking on making a sex tape per se, but the fact that she's acting like she actually had to work hard for the money she has is kind of a joke. The whole reason she exists in our culture and people have heard of her is the fact that she has money that she didn't have to make herself.

She was a well known stylist and boutique owner in Hollywood before the tape came out.

Plus she probably got some money after her divorce from some record producer pre- Ray J.

So unlike Paris...she did work for a living.

@nyc-caribbean-ragazza: she's a lovely girl and looks good in photographs who has famous and very wealthy patronage and has "worked" and all that, but the only reason people know who she is in the first place is because of a sex tape. the reason why she has a publicist is because of a sex tape. nobody outside of the l.a. area (or people who weren't familiar with damon thomas, her ex-husband) knew who the hell she was prior to the sex tape.

@Imjustnotthatintoyou: it's not slut shaming by any means, and even barbara walters has publicly questioned her on it...i don't agree with bw on many things, but i agree with her on this one.

You know, I think there were fits and starts of Gwyneth being talented. And then it all just went straight to her head and she started believing her own press and she just stopped showing up. It's not ego, per se. Or maybe it is.

I feel that way about a lot of big actors, like Julia Roberts, Will Smith, even Tom Hanks sometimes.

I never feel that way about Cate Blanchett, or Kate Winslet, or Johnny Depp. Also actors who've been in BIG movies and they consistently "show up" to their films.
