The coolest thing is that McCloskey wrote the books about his daughters, Sal and Jane. That means that the real Sal is like 65 years old now. How awesome must is be to know that you are the main character in one of the best children's books of all time.

Picking the damn sweet corn, that I'm not nostalgic about. That was grown ON PURPOSE, not collected wild, and we were always dirty and grumpy by the end of the day. We'd get up butt-fuck early, pick corn until we couldn't carry anymore, and then shuck it and de-silk it and wash it and scrape it and cook all fucking day, for like two or three days straight.
We'd put up gallons and gallons of it to be frozen and reheated all winter.
I am sick to death of sweet corn. Can't touch the stuff to this day.

(My husband bought me a copy of this as a wedding present and I wept.)

@wascally_wabbit: I just think it's such a good message: when you share, you make your community a better place! Small, individual acts of kindness have the power to change a lot!

Also, One Morning In Maine always made me cry and cry, because Sal loses her tooth in the mud.
I was a weird kid.
