I will forever be mad at myself for passing up being a personal shopper at bergdorf when i was 21. i would have literally had to drop out of college to do it and i had a year left, but I would have been making at least three times the amount of what i have made since college - 5 years ago - all together.

The reason that they try to keep cameras away is that these are rare Russian nesting personal shoppers. Each of the women can open up to reveal another, slightly smaller woman, who opens up to reveal another, slightly smaller woman, et cetera, until a small army of personal shoppers of various sizes are scurrying around Bergdorf with armloads of coture. Once they have finished with the sale, each of the nesting shoppers returns to her location within the next largest personal shopper, until only two large Russian nesting personal shoppers remain and the public is none the wiser.

I've always been somewhat of an amateur personal shopper. I am not employed by any fancy department store or boutique. Unlike fancy personal shoppers, I wander around my local grocery store and put embarassing items in other people's carts.

Far more patronizing is the attitude that we can't handle the existence of wealth, that we require everyone to make a sanctimonious pretense of frugality for a few weeks.

Agreed that this is patronizing. I am an adult. I can handle the idea that not everyone's bank accounts are equal. Plus the assumption that my reaction to wealth would be automatically judgmental and petty is amazingly self-absorbed. Notice to Bergdorf ladies: I don't care what you do.

I'm kind of tired of people talking about luxury spending not being right in "times like this." (same goes for college students blaming the economy for their brokeness.) Like Kate Hudson saying she's making homemade gifts instead of buying them. If people still have the money, then it's better for the economy if they spend it.

Sadie, this does NOT look like a fun job. Why would you want to deal, every day, all day, with people who are richer than God? Regardless of what you make, you are still pretty much their personal servant for the time they are in the store: you fetch them everything they need, you arrange their lives, you pay them undivided attention. Even if you make awesome money, I don't have the temperament for that.

@ChildBride: Yes, but, essentially my job is the same. My clients are richer than God, demanding, and I am their personal servant. Except I'm a LAWYER. I'd rather make the same bank (or more, apparently) shopping for others than drafting contracts.

Okay, Sadie? Thank you for this. I'm not a proponent of trickle-down economics by any means, but if consumers sit on their money and don't buy things, companies can't make money to pay their employees. Jobs get lost, companies can't innovate, it's not happy.

Rich people have done far, far stupider things with their money than to hire personal shoppers. Rich people will continue to buy things that strike the rest of us as absurd. It's better than sitting on the money and not getting it out into the consumer economy.

@tscheese: I will be servicey like that, because I've spent a lot this Christmas. Not as much as last year when I got the Lexus SUV, but I have not held back on the gifties for family; actually, we raised our limit this year.

@Sophie needs to study...but isn't: Having any name that rhymes with any word for male or female genitalia while enrolled in elementary-high school is not good because children are creative & vicious (this rule applies until adulthood, unless one is a teacher, in which case, it will apply until retirement).

@gerbilsoutofexile (kickin' anti-d's old skool, ba-beeee): Based on my memory of grade school, the following people were the object of many cruel rhymes: Nick, Rick, & Mick, Doris/Delorus, honorable mention for Shey, Jay, & Faye whose heterosexuality was hotly disputed. The apex of cruelty really came about with last names, however, many of which rhyme with many embarrassing things.
