Finally saw this last night, really great though heartbreaking. Been thinking about it a lot today. I'd like to know more about Little Edie's later years hanging out in LA and Florida, I'm glad she got some time outside of that damned house.
I think the captions capture the Edie's perfectly, and I don't think it's mocking in any way. These women were as eccentric as they come and it is rare to come across that these days. I think Little Edie would have loved this.
It sucks that you can never get through a Drew Barrymore post where someone doesn't harp on the shape of her mouth and tell us all how annoyed they are by it.
@littlemisslondon: I find the Edies' story fascinating, but not in any way humorous. It's like my interest in Sylvia Plath--her story interests me to no end, but I can't imagine taking a photo of her, photoshopping it into an oven, and captioning it LOL MOST PEOPLE JUST BAKE COOKIES IN HERE! I get my comedy elsewhere, you know?
@littlemisslondon: The Jezetors seem obsessed with everything Grey Gardens and I don't get it. I don't get how they're considered to be a fashion inspiration by people like Marc Jacobs, either. Maybe it's the Kennedy connection? These pictures are just sad to me.
@littlemisslondon: I don't really care about the Edie's, but as an architecture buff love the pictures of their house. So long as those keep coming, I'll happily keep reading the posts!
@littlemisslondon: Totally with you on that. They're obviously mentally ill and I felt guilty and voyeuristic when I watched the movie because they so clearly needed HELP.
@littlemisslondon: But I think there's a certain wishful thinking that goes with it. Not that they were living a dream, but I think a lot of people would love to be that theatrical and that careless about their surroundings. I've heard many a woman who has said something like "I'm going to be a crazy old lady." Even when they let themselves go, they were quite witty and funny. And there's a camp quality to it. According to Mommie Dearest, Joan Crawford was abusive, but the wire hangers bit is quoted all the time.
In a weird way, I think everyone secretly wants to stop caring about everything and just be crazy once in a while. That's probably what makes the Edies' story so popular.
Did the next owners restore the house? I'd love to see it in all its glory. I'd also like to think that Ben Bradlee would appreciate what he had in his possession.
They played the original after the HBO doc last Saturday. The first thing I was struck by, is how ACCURATE Drew Barrymores accent is. It sounded a bit fake to me in the HBO version, but it really is spot on. And it was also fun comparing the reproduced scenes with the original ones. The detail is painstaking.
