A friend of mine just came back from a trip to the city yesterday. When I asked her what she did, she pulled out the Playbill for 9-5. Apparently, her best friend is the executive producer and she got to see an advanced screening. She was really happy with it - she even showed me her friend's name in the Playbill.

Her honest review: "If someone asked me if it was worth $75 to get a ticket for 9-5, I would say yes."

@Trulymadlyme: Mama Mia was terrible theater, but unbelievably enjoyable. I imagine this is about the same, although I don't have the money to find out! For real, can the govt' subsidize the arts so I can afford to go?

@muppetprincess: The gov't doesn't do that in New York, but a lot of the theaters do. There are student rushes for a good number of the shows, as well as just standard rush tickets available for some. Usually having a student ID will get you the most options for super cheap seats- on my last trip to the city in February, I got 'Speed the Plow' for $35 (and met Raul Esparza and took a picture with him!!!) and the last preview of 'Story of my Life', which closed that weekend, for $20.

@EdnasEdibles: I actually saw Spamalot with a friend last summer, and while some of the musical numbers were interesting, the dialogue had me yawning (it's a wan carbon-copy of the Monty Python and the Holy Grail dialogue. I love the movie, but if you've seen it as many times as I have, you get a little tired of people spouting the lines as if it's the last source of humor that ever existed on planet Earth.)

Shrek looks positively fecal.

@wooden_shoes: @Sandicomm: @tscheese: I'm all bitter about Spamalot because I saw it in previews in Chicago and had such high expectations but I hated the whole "You can't do Broadway if you don't have jews" crap and the whole weird gay song and dance number. It was like watching a weird horrible Will & Grace episode merged with Monty Python. Plus, the woman behind me was under the mistaken impression that I'd paid money to hear HER sing "Always look on the bright side of life".
