Aung San Suu Kyi was one of the five "heroes" I wrote about in 8th grade. I read an article about her in "Parade" and cried for hours. I can still remember the pictures of her sons and husband accepting her Peace Prize for her and of her giving a speech from behind the gate of her house. She's amazing.
That'll teach poor Indian girls to ride horses, those slutty whores!
In seriousness, a couple years ago I came up with what I think is a brill idea: perforate girls' hymens at birth. They serve NO purpose whatsoever except to shame women who don't have them (whether because they were born without or because they played rough sports as kids or whatever), and occasionally can be the cause of extreme pain and frustration once they DO become sexually active. Save everyone a lot of grief and get rid of 'em before they matter.
I'm confused about the virginity test. The article says that the marriage program is for "unmarried, widowed, divorced or abandoned" women - and they're all expected to be virgins? Something is not adding up.
@Rooo sez BISH PLZ: HAAHAHAHAHAAA! Dogs not manipulative. That is darling!
All our fluffy pets are awesome, but they all know what our buttons are, too. We've been living together for thousands of years, after all. It's not their fault they've paid better attention to us than we have to them.
Has anyone ever seen the PBS special on cats? Cats in the wild don't meow - it was an adaptive thing when cats began living with humans, as a result to adapt to human vocalizations, and meowing is only used for communicating with humans. So they're clever and observational - a few more years of evolution and they'll figure out how to turn on the stove and cook dinner.
@ShanaElmsford:these tests are super faulty and many active women tear hymens before having sex. And if you have a thick one, you may still have an intact hymen after sex. It's a very unreliable test.
My cat mastered the purr to meow back to purr as a young kitten and I thought it was the most endearing noise to ever bless my ears. Oh you want some of this food that I am eating? Sure kitty, here.
Ugh, just finished reading "Infidel" and I can't help but agree with its author about the abominable nature of some cultural and religious practices that shame women for having or expressing sexual desire. I cannot stand behind any notion that supports this kind of control.
@Raederle: Technially our clitoris is our sexual desire organ, but I would agree with you. If God didn't want us to enjoy sex, why did he give us a vagina with a clitoris and with nerve endings? You'd have thought that in his infinite wisdom he would have just made us numb down there.
@Mafalda para Presidente: You have a good point. I was thinking that the issue of hymens, intact or otherwise, has brought many women lots of grief over the years.
@Mafalda para Presidente: I just did an essay on "Infidel". After reading her description of the removal of her clitoris, I've stopped trying to understand any motives involved with the "procedure". I think the worst thing I've ever read is the girls that shamed other girls who peed too loudly in the bathroom, since peeing too loudly indicates that you're not sewn up anymore, and hence, a slut.
@LuvEwan: I also had no idea about that, or about the fact that your husband is supposed to tear the scar apart during your first time having intercourse. It just all sounds so painful and degrading.
@Mafalda para Presidente: I can't imagine the pain. Seriously. I'm a virgin and while reading that I definitely threw up in my mouth a little. I can't imagine.
I don't understand what the indecency is related to trousers. Don't dresses/skirts give easier access to ladyparts? Or is it that wearing trousers is viewed as male impersonation?
Sitting here in my plaid Graduation 2004 boxers with holes ripped in the crotch, I am totally mystified and horrified for these poor women.
@LuvEwan: I was thinking the same thing. I'm laying on my couch in my old jeans wondering what the hell is so indecent about something that fully covers me from the waist down.
I'm guessing that it's a stereotypical thing where women wear the dresses (skirts?) and men wear the pants.
@sarah0220 (please don't take my star): I think it may also be because pants are suggestive of crotches, spreading legs, etc. Skirts - long ones, anyway - mask the fact that ladies have two legs capable of being separated.
@dearheart: That was fucking HILARIOUS. I could not stop laughing when that happened. I tell you, every so often The Simpsons shows me glimmers of the past and why it used to be so damn funny.
