Well, there's the first albums I listened to as a child vs. the first album that really and truly made me obsessive about music. The childhood favorite was probably something by The Supremes or The Shangri-las... my mom played a lot of girl groups when I was little. But the first album to make me flip flop inside like I was falling in love (unlike all the hair metal and pop bands that I just lusted after) had to be Juliana Hatfield's Hey Babe.
Hmm, I'm going say The Beatles "Abbey Road". My dad copied his album onto tape so I could play it when I wanted to. I loved Maxwell's Silver Hammer. Yeah, I was an odd child. I had my own stereo at 5 since I loved music so much, and was raised by an audiophile. I have memories of my dad buying his cd player and driving across town to the only record store that sold cds (only imports at the time) and when he bought his Bose speakers.
Pearl Jam's "Ten." It was the first cassette I ever owned and I can still hum along to all the guitar solos.
A very, very close second would be the Clash's "London Calling." It was my first introduction to old school punk and it initiated a lifelong love of that musical style which had a major impact on my adolescence.
A few albums that addicted me to music: DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing," Can's "Cannibalism 1," the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique" and my top 80's album, the Minutemen's "Double Nickels on the Dime."
How has nobody named The Wall?! I can't be the only one with a Pink Floyd junkie for a father. He also turned me on to Clapton, Neil Young and Van Morrison, among so many others.
The first album I bought with my own money, and not cribbed from my parents' taste, was the Stand By Me soundtrack. And for me, hells yeah it holds up.
Quite honestly, mine was Guns N Roses, "Use Your Illusion II". Blew me away at the age of 11!! Just re-listened recently and I surprisingly agree with my wacky little self.
@ObtuseIntolerant: I'll still be listening to that when I'm 80. I had the BIGGEST crush on Slash, too. (I still do actually, even though he's balding now :(..)
@Ascendo_tuum: OMG Slash was my love as well!! It's funny, as a biracial girl, I didn't even know until a couple of years ago that he was mixed like me. I guess I knew on some level. :)
@ObtuseIntolerant: I had a poster of him over my bed. I think I had my first orgasm looking at Slash..so he'll always hold a special place in my er..heart.
Hands down Jeff Buckley's "Grace" will always and forever mean the most to me. Buckley is #1
After that throw in some radiohead, sam cooke, john zorn, bad brains, alison krauss, boyz II men and spoon and you've got only the tip of the iceberg that is my random musical taste.
Pearl Jam's "Ten" was the first album that I connected to on a mature level...I was about around 11 or 12. Then I started listening to my mom's old Beatles records and fell in love with "Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Band."
In college, Dave Matthews Band made me truly appreciate music and not just lyrics...and then Radiohead finished the process of my obsession with music.
@arodriguez.romero: I have no North African recommendation, sadly, but I will always-always recommend Johnny Clegg & Savuka/Juluka even though they're from South Africa. I could probably get recommendations from a belly-dancing friend, though, who went to Tunisia.
@musicpup is worth twenty camels: I'm hung up on African music for a long while now, lately no. of the sahara but my first love is so. of, so I will listen to Johnny Clegg & Savuka/Juluka.
If your friend gives you some recommendations from Tunisia, please PM me! I will pay you twenty camels.
@arodriguez.romero: They're technically two different bands, but mostly consisted of the same members. He was big on the anti-Apartheid movement and is an amazing man all-around, as far as I'm concerned.
Will they be drugged, smuggled camels, though? (Sorry. My father insisted on enlightening me about camel smuggling, which apparently involves feeding them weed as a narcotic.)
@arodriguez.romero: I was able to upstage (or 'face' as the period dictated) my best friend's stepfather by naming Scheherezade in a game of "Name That Tune" at age 13 over his claim that it was something else. I may be a little proud of that moment 20+ years later. Maybe.
@arodriguez.romero: "I am guessing no one has said Rimsky-Korsakov:Scheherazade"
I played the English horn solo in that in Area All State Orchestra when I was 15. On my teacher's horn (those things are expensive, and my parents had just bought me an oboe b/c I was getting decent).
@Rooo sez BISH PLZ: wait really? I was thinking of it cuz my son played it in Junior All County just yesterday. It was a little watered down tho, so I was bummed.
@squirrelcop: Ok I bow to you, you got me beat by a few years. I don't know when I discovered it but I wasn't 13.
My dad also used to play Oldies constantly, and I really loved 60s music as a kid. But the first album I bought for myself as a teenager and played to death was the cassette tape of No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom, which I still totally love. Now I want to go listen to it. It brings me back to middle school.

I currently love Rachid Taha Made in Medina which is a little out of date. Any suggestions in that North African style Jezebel?
