you know, it is so interesting because can you imagine how many OTHER medications have these varying effects for people who take them? for instance, for some people, benadryl makes them sleepy (me); for others, it makes them hyper (SigOth). ???!!! Craziness. It kind of makes you wonder what personality 'issues' are being caused by all these meds. It also makes me realize that a lot of the crazy people I know just might be on bad drugs. Hmmm...
I'm really starting to wonder if the best birth control method is condoms. I'm sick of going on one pill after another and being worried about strokes and blood clots and having crazy emotions.
I was on the patch when the nonsense about that all came out, and now I'm on Yaz and kind of unhappy with it. My periods are unpredictable, either light or REALLY heavy and start before my placebo pills. The cramps this past week were unbelievable.
Yaz made my PMDD and my complexion dramatically worse. it also gave me severe morning sickness for the entire two months I gave it a shot. I'll stick with condoms until Mr. Beets gets the snip snip, thanks.
I'm on Yasmin, which I think might be similar but is a bit different. The cramps are the devil but it's made my skin amazing and period 3 days long and no more crying like a maniac during my pre-period days!
I'm pretty convinced that without the side effects of hormonal birth control a lot of us wouldn't be here (I know for a fact it has something to do with my existence AND that of my fraternal twin brother (f**cking with your reproductive system=two eggs=twice the bebeh-making fun)). I say that not as a crazy fundie but as someone who figures that it ultimately *has* to be the only reason that many women put up with the awful side effects for as long as they do.
le sigh
damned if you do, damned if you don't. but then again, most of the time I'm happy to be here. Thank you, bc, for me and my twin bro!
BCP is a prescription. Like all prescription drugs, make sure you talk to your doctor before skipping off to the pharmacy with stars in your eyes. If your doc isn't willing to discuss ALL the impacts of a medication then find someone who will. There's a reason why there are 100's of BCP on the market. What might be right for you might not be right for some...
@anastasia beaverhousen: VERY good point, I have an amazing doctor who dealt with me going through 5 different BC's in the past 2 years. We've tried a lot of things and finally got something that works, it's definitely NOT a one sizes fits all system!
@TheUptightMidwesterner -Brrrr- TURKEYS DONE!: No. I cry when I don't have hormonal birth control. Apparently people's bodies are different, and Yaz works for people who have PMDD (not PMS). So without it I'd cry. I'll ask my bf if he's too scared to have sex with me though...
@AwkwardTurtle: Yeah, my sex life has dwindled remarkably. It was even worse when I was on Zoloft at the same time. I never wanted to even be touched. Serious damper on the relationship.
Wow. I'm on Yaz and now I'm a little scared. For me it totally cleared up my post-period crazy time (seriously, I would border on homicidal) and helped my skin a bit, but I haven't had any completely horrible side-effects... am I alone here?
@RingTailedLemur: One of my closest friends has had a dandy time on Yaz and can't say enough good things about it. Everyone else I know, not so much. It's definitely one of those uber-personal things.
@RingTailedLemur: i've been on it for a year and a half, no real problems except weird period stopping-and-restarting for the first few months.
then again, i've been on BCP for 10 YEARS since i was 15, this is the 4th i've used (loestrin, ortho tri-cyclen, and seasonale were the others). and to be honest, i can't give an assessment of what affect they have had on me, because i've been on them so long i don't remember what i was like before! i do recall a whole hell of a lot more cramps and more than one petrifying school day where my period came out of NOWHERE. so at least those aren't issues anymore.
@EKane: I can't tell if you're being serious about that side effect, but my sister had it too (which as I said above is why we ended up in the ER one night). I *think* it's because Yaz increases the levels of potassium in your body, and that makes you feel twitchy and can lead to other things.
@EKane: I got those cramps in my leg while I was on Yasmin. It felt like someone was sticking a fork in my calf and twisting my muscle around, like it was spaghetti. I got off it and haven't had one since. Those cramps would sometimes last for days, though, and were so bad sometimes that I limped. I no longer take HBC at all.
@Dictator for Life: Hmm... this makes me think my "cramps" are growing pains even more. I'm going through a freaky post-puberty-early-twenties growth thingy, its really freaky to have painful ankles and knees and tight muscles in between.
Well, I hope Yaz will at least still do my taxes. My super cool lady doctor friend told me when we were out for drinks together that Yaz can do all kinds of neat stuff.
@Political Party Girl: Every time I get all made up and go to awesome pool/cocktail parties an sit in colorful chairs with my hot young lady doctor friends, they give me the scoop on the latest prescriptions too! How convenient!
*crosses fingers and hopes the new HBC will not ULTRA SUCK as bad as the last few because it will have a steady stream of hormones to prevent hormone-change induced migraines*
