    In reply to Barbie Rips Off Aqua's "Barbie Girl" For Her Own "Do The Barbie" Dance
    I always thought Barbie Girl was intended as a satirical joke at Barbie's expense. Was that just youthful naivete/ wishful thinking?

    @samethingwedoeverynightpinky: No, I think you're right. You'd think Mattel would pick up on that, too.

    @NellMood: Yeah. I'm trying to figure out who this ad is aimed at. It seems people old enough to remember/enjoy the Aqua song would be out of the Barbie buying demographic, and would think this song was pretty dumb because it didn't realize the original song was making fun of it. And if the kids they're trying to sell to don't remember the song anyway, what's the point of bringing it back? Were they just too lazy to write their own song about Barbie from scratch?

    @samethingwedoeverynightpinky: I'm guessing they just didn't want to write a new one, honestly.

    @samethingwedoeverynightpinky: exactly - that's why Mattel sued, for trademark infringement/dilution (basically, putting their mark in a bad light). It was a very important case at the time, an early case testing whether parody/first amendment rights would trump trademark holders' rights under the new dilution law. Aqua won, and now apparently is making money off of Mattel. Yay Aqua.

    Holy crap. The way the Dolls moved reminded me of creepy stop motion zombies. Like in Evil Dead 2 with the headless girlfriend.

    @ImproperDancing: Improper indeed.

    It's especially weird when they cut away from the stop-motion dolls to the human dancers. The contrast highlights just how unreal Barbie's anatomical proportions are; the human dancers look weirdly stubby at first, like when you're watching a video in the wrong aspect ratio.

    Wasn't the original song making a comment on the way the world and specifically American culture Barbizes it's women and turns them into nothing but living dolls without a real life? That's what I thought, maybe I'm crazy though. In my mind Barbie actually using a song that satirizes "Barbie Culture" is delicious. And sad, very, very sad.

    @hortense: If by Doll'icious you mean Wanna-Commit-Multiple-Arsons'icious..., why yes. Yes, indeed.

    @TexasCrude: That's actually exactly what Doll'icious means. This song is very dark.
