Color me shocked that Barbara Bush out of all first ladies- she of the three-stranded pearl necklace, helmet of hair, and conservative wardrobe- was the one that preferred more "natural-looking" arrangements.
If there's a Chief White House Florist then why did Andy Shephard have such a hard time getting Sydney Ellen Wade of Virginia a dogwood branch? He had to pick roses out of the Rose Garden for gods sake!
I think they should just promote from within and appoint Sasha Obama the new White House chief florist. All floral arrangements will be handsfull of daisies, dandelions, and various other blooms plucked from the White House lawn and placed in McDonald's collectors' cups.
@JessicaLovejoy: Laughing, riding, cornholing!: Ah, what's juvenile about it? She liked making those potato batteries that she would use to revive Lyndon Johnson with every few weeks.
@JessicaLovejoy: Laughing, riding, cornholing!: I once had to suffer through a college friend's slideshow of "vegetable porn". Sorry sweetie, but I do not consider peppers to be "sexy".
I am totally digging the hydrangea/sunflower combo up there.
I love flowers. I recall a Dorothy Parker short story where the main character makes a point of getting new flowers in her house every three days, and I was always super jealous. Ah, to be rich.
@saintbernadette: the WH has people that are just pastry chefs. we share a dock with a former one and the things that man can whip up in a sailboat's galley will make your tongue quiver with excitement.
@linnyt is a walking cliché: Truth, my mom knows a former pastry chef who worked for the Clinton White House. In general, she bakes the most amazing things.
So, in regards to all this teabagging nonsense... I just have to post the following rant:
One of my husband's coworkers is super-conservative. Her husband works in construction and has been out of work lately because of the housing slump, so she has been INCESSANTLY whining about how poor they are, and they can't pay their bills, and etc. He's been on unemployment for maybe 5 or 6 months now, despite the fact that there are plenty of non-construction jobs (esp service industry) available in our area. Yesterday, we found out they just bought a new car, 2 new ATVs, and took a vacation to ride said ATVs. One would assume they at least partially funded all of these things with their unemployment money.
Somehow, though, they still manage to be VEHEMENT in their opposition to any sort of publicly funded assistance and bitch and moan about taxation all the time. To me, this seems like the height of hypocrisy.
@gangey: And illogic. But then, there are a lot of people who manage to make it through life without the burden of logic or self-awareness. Or shame. To these I say, "Do you drive on roads? Send your kids to public school? Plan to receive Social Security benefits or Medicare? Call the police or fire departments? Use running water? Then shut it and pay your taxes! You hate paying taxes? Well, duh! Everyone does, dumbass. But smart people understand this is the price we pay for living in a functioning society. If you don't like it, go live off the grid and see how well you survive."
