I had coffee with a friend in that very cafe (magazines and all!) the last time I was in Tel Aviv, last July. It was a different President, though, so my despair was much, much deeper as I drank my cafe hafuch! Indeed, sometimes I want to slap the current President for giving me hope again. Damn him, I'd given up! But I can feel my fingers crossing and my heart thawing.

The speech was amazing. His ability to rein in and do justice to the competing truths of all the people to whom he must appeal is astonishing. He really is kinda Lincolnian....

(Moment of cultural learnings: There is a "Lincoln Street" in Tel Aviv, and it shares a corner with "Wilson Street." These streets are pronounced "Leen-ko-len" and "Vilsohn." I loved telling people that I would meet them on the corner of "Leen-ko-len and Vilsohn.")

I don't think Americans are really grasping the enormity of what Obama is doing right now. For years, the whole Israeli situation has just kind of rocked along with both sides dying. He is really asking for a change. Bush didn't even meet with the folks himself.

And this is what is angering my older relatives - that Obama is treating Muslims with respect and not just blustering at them. They call it "appeasement". I call it smoothing the way for diplomacy and constructive conversation.

@Flackette Goes Retro: Mr. P and I can't even talk about Obama anymore. Mr. P thinks anything other than carte blanche for Israel means we're being handed over to the Palestinians. The blind eye has helped no one.

Tank tops... I remember wearing those..

It is June and I am wearing a fleece hoodie. Still doesn't keep me warm enough outside with the wind. Bluh. Looks like I need to fly to Tel Aviv.
