    More seriously, I think that if Mr. Obama, as expected, spends more time out and about in the District than Presidents of recent times, then something can be done about the state of our nation's capital. As someone who is there frequently, I think that much could change if a sitting President took interest in his own neighborhood.


    I heard on NPR this weekend that the last time Mr. Bush went out to eat in DC was in 2003. Pathetic.

    @ItchykooParker: True, but I'm not so much talking about him as I'm talking about people's reactions to him. As I've said before, I just come from a different political culture where no one can be arsed to follow political leaders around all day while they "act cute".

    @PilgrimSoul: Well, yes, it is vapid! And I will even admit to a certain squeemishness about all the open lusting after the President-elect of the United States of America (no judging, other readers! Just expressing my own little corner of prudishness!).


    But it is, all told, very pleasant vapidity, particularly in comparison to the vapidity to which we became accustomed over the last eight years. Vapidity of the squee will always win over vapidity of the mind.

    @ellaesther: Yes, I feel we are entitled to a certain amount of gleeful euphoria (my word of the day) after having finally ousted the Cheney regime and voted in an intelligent, compassionate President.


    Not that I don't expect results. But he is smart, and handsome. I'll take that combo in my national leader, thankyouverymuch!

    @PilgrimSoul: Don't worry, he's on top of the policy...but those of us worried about being able to afford to fill up our oil tanks for the remainder of winter kinda need the babyholding, handsomeness, girls+puppies and whatnot.


    For example, while most of my friends are worried about their Inauguration plans, I am more concerned with booking time to do the Easter Egg Roll at the White House in floofy pastel dresses with my little one to mark the historical Presidency...

    It's going to be so nice to get to look at pictures of him for at least the next four years. You know what's also going to be lovely? Listening to his voice.
