I sat and watched the returns here in Thailand. There was not a dry eye in the tiny restaurant during Obama's acceptance speach. Truly an amazing, moving day!
@mujerpoder: I'm in Indonesia right now, I don't see much response (he grew up here, it should be bigger?) but I'm bawling. Thank you for restoring the World's faith in the USA, American constituents! We still love you.
@nescafe: I care! I'm not American, and like the majority of the rest of the world I'm very glad Obama won, but this is kind of spoiling it for me. Especially the fact that the same people who elected Obama also banned gay marriage. Not that ready for change, after all?
@h4nn4h: I'm Israeli. I'm in California though, and Prop 8 is something that affects my friends personally. People are understandably overjoyed about the first black prez, but what about gay rights? Hello? Why no live blog about those results? It's like no one gives a shit. Obama mentioned gay people in his acceptance speech, so I hope he starts taking a stand on this sometime soon. The election is over and there is nothing holding him back now, he can go ahead and "offend" people who hate homosexuals. I hope he cares enough. Help us, dude!
I have known this man was going to be president since I saw him speak as a state senator. Six plus years ago. He is my candidate. I can't believe this. I really can't. I've kept myself from feeling this for so long. You do what we expect you to do Barack. I know you can. YES WE CAN!

You bet. I'm here as the conscience for the faux-feminists who parrot unsubstantiated theory while their panties wedge up in their . . . what is it . . "va jay jays" for an attractive, unqualified male.
@Penultima: faux-feminists hmmm? Please send me your copy of "What makes a woman a REAL feminist."
Also FYI, never have I called my VAGINA a "va jay jay", how about you learn not to marginalize a whole group of people based on your own preconceived prejudices?
This is the most wonderful, pure, and joyful I have ever felt. I am proud of my country, of my fellow citizens, and of my new president. I have a leader that I truly believe in. I go to bed tonight knowing that I will wake tomorrow on a new world, in a future I have been dreaming of all my life.
I know I am going to be exhausted when I wake up in a couple of hours, and I know it is rainy and dreary outside on the streets of D.C but my mental playlistt will be on repeat with this ALL DAY LONG:
I jacked myself up on caffeine today (free coffee at Starbucks...yes plz). So that mean I will never sleep tonight. Screw 11 AM classes, I'm celebrating!!!
@onestrawplz: I teach at a university in the Midwest and if my students don't show up tomorrow, I don't care. If you want to skip my class tomorrow because of this historic election and the craziness of celebrating, all I can say is, "Yes you can!"
@zora: I wishhhh I could skip class but I've got econ in the morning and that's my major so I don't have a lot of a say in whether or not to skip. I asked my prof in my last class for permission to skip today because I had class straight from like 12:30-7 pm with only an hour break, not long enough to head to the polls, and he was like "Of course! If you vote, you're allowed to complain!" So I love awesome professors who let students skip on such a historic day.
People are singing and carousing and honking their horns and setting off fireworks and god knows what else here in Portland. I've been dancing and crying and holy shit, what a relief. "hooray" is the understatement of the last 200 years.
I was looking after a friend's dog (post-back surgery) so she could go to the rally (she lives one block from Grant Park). It was like the Cubs/White Sox/Bears/Bulls/Blackhawks had won championships, with people milling about, smiling, honking horns, and whooping with joy.
It's no secret that I prefered McCain, but I don't deny anyone their enjoyment of this historic victory, and I wish President-elect Obama well. May he lead our country with wisdom and care.
@murielmercurial: It's too important for our country and its citizens to do anything other than wish President-elect Obama success. McCain is a good man, and I hope we can move on from trashing him out of respect for his graciousness in defeat.
@langtry: Thank you for that. I really needed to hear it. I respect McCain with all my heart and his concession speech was the best I'd seen from him all campaign.
