@Penny: Oh yeah, here's one more thing: Malcolm X Park is like two feet away. Were these asswipes so fucking stupid that they couldn't read a Google map to get there? I thought a creative writing degree necessitates a base level of literacy. Oh wait, then they couldn't have it in the middle of a major street via the Twitter, and hence be "quirky".
@ragamufffin: They have one, it plows the area right around the Capitol. Oh wait, that probably belongs to the federal govt. So yeah, you're right, the city definitely doesn't have any. DC is such a joke in the snow.
Does DC give cops Hummers to drive? If not, it doesn't surprise me that the type of cop who would pull a gun at a snowball fight is the type of jerk-wad that drives a Hummer.
@PaintedTrollop: I am amazed by how many people in large SUVs are getting stuck on the DC streets. We keep seeing people trying to drive out of parking spaces without shoveling the snow away. My husband had to push a neighbors car out of a spot while both of the neighbors sat in the car.
@Lymed: Coming from a family that runs a car dealership I'm not surprised at all. The vast majority of the people that buy large four wheel drive vehicles have no idea of how to drive them which when combined with no knowledge of the physics principle of the conservation of momentum* makes mechanics and body shops a lot of money every winter.
*(items at rest will tend to stay at rest, and items in motion will tend to stay in motion unless acted on by an outside force)
@Lymed: It's because they don't know how to drive in snow - especially a great big SUV. I live in the mountains of northern NH, and I drive a Toyota Corolla - and I never get stuck!
@whats_in_a_name: good point. Whenever there's a big storm up here, it's SUV's and pickups that are off the road. I saw an SUV on the highway once that had launched off the snowbank on the side of the road, and was nestled in the lower branches of a tree.
@Lymed: Your point is well taken---this person is required to carry a gun by virtue of his job, etc. I read Penny's comment as a lament that only idiots get guns, but everyone can get a gun; most people just choose not to exercise that right.
On a technical level, some police departments do not provide their officers with a gun, but include a gun stipend in their salary. The officer is then required to supply their own gun, which must be of a make and model listed on the department's preapproved list. I don't know whether NYPD's guns are department-owned or officer-owned.
@Penny: I sincerely hope you're being somewhat jokey. Yes, there are idiots in every profession, and yes, some idiots are cops, which is extra frightening and makes you want really fucking stringent hiring requirements. But that's a pretty broad brush you're painting with: my boyfriend and his fellow police academy grads are some of the smartest, most laid-back and thoughtful people I've ever met. I hope you're more thoughtful about how you categorize entire professions in the future.
I'm so shaken by the news about Daul. I can't even put words together. Her blog was fantastic; she was such a ray of light. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones.
Do you think Helena is covering her eye on the i-D cover because she can't wink? I can't wink, and I get teased about it all the time; it'd be great to know which celebrity can bring the cause to a wider audience...
@suiterkin: You might be right. Or maybe she realized that winking in photographs end up looking kind of dumb and found a way out. The other two just look kind of drunk/stoned.
@lavenderstain: I wish she could have held on. Everything changes, what is terrible at 20 will be a distant memory at 21. I hope her family finds peace. Two words: Support Groups. They are a God-send.

I was, indeed, only half serious, but I was certainly not talking about cops. I have a lot of respect, overall, for the law enforcement community.
