I WANT him to try to run. I want him to try to take off again, get caught, and then get slammed extra hard. Then just about everyone will HAVE to see what a coward he is and there'll be even less chance of leniency.
@SUNNY1: But he's going to run straight to France, which will just pull the same routine as the last 30 years. All Polanski has to do is weep into his pile of money until someone comes along and offers to rig his way into France. And then? Voila!
On the other hand, if he does run, maybe we can try some sort of thing where we tell Whitey Bulger that if he takes care of Polanski, he too can stop with all of this tiring fugitive business and return to Boston. Since we're in the business of equating flight from justice with understandable self-preservation.
@limber: Haha! In my head, what happens is Polanski is running towards a plane that will take him to France, but at the last moment he's tackled by Swiss forces and the plane takes off without him. He never actually manages to leave Switzerland, he just tries.
Is my imagination a little to active? I'll leave you to decide...
Well, he's been in jail for a couple months now, right? I'm rather pleased with that aspect of all this, at least.
Last I read he hasn't yet been released pending possible appeal of his bail. If the bail is as hard-ass as the court is trying to make it sound, if he makes one wrong move and the cops swarm him, then I guess I'm OK with it. Plus maybe he has the decency not to screw his family, if the house is part of what he would surrender. Eh, I dunno if I have much faith in that, though.
The more I type, the more I'm convinced he's gonna flee. Shit.
The Swiss Criminal Court said it still considered Mr. Polanski a high flight risk, but that the new bail offer was significant enough to offset those concerns.
He basically bribed him, but bribe isn't the word because to bribe someone it would have to be a secret. I wonder what it says on his receipt:
Ticket out of jail $4,500,000.
Roman Polanski, dressed as Lucy Van Pelt, places a football that represents his trustworthyness on a field. First, a young girl walks up. As she runs to kick the ball, Polanski pulls it away and then drugs and rapes her.
Then the US judicial system walks up. As they run to kick the ball, Polanski pulls it away and hops on a plane.
The French think Polanski's antics are benign and quite adorable.
But then the Swiss show up. They think they know the score. Polanski promises that he will not pull the ball away again. In fact, he bets the Swiss 4.5 million dollars that he won't. The Swiss run up to the ball...
@Vivelafat says Sweep the leg, Johnny.: They said he'll be under house arrest with electronic monitoring. So in theory his flight risk should be relatively low. That being said, it's Polanski. He was willing to pay $4.5 million to stay out of jail. I put nothing past this disgusting creature.
@AndPreciousLittleofThat: I can just imagine Dog and Beth showing up at his villa in France. Somehow I don't think of Dog as a person that would fit in well in Paris.
Isn't that what bail is for? Like, the whole reason they have bail?
Are we saying the bail should have been higher, or that there shouldn't have been the option?
@femme-bot: I think what people are saying is that bail is routinely denied to defendants that are considered to be a flight risk, which he is since he, (1) was a fugitive for 30 yrs (2) has all the money in the world and (3) can simply cross the border to France and be safe.
I find it interesting that when the bail was $5 million, there was no groundswell from his "supporters" to bail him out. Now, at $20 million, I expect the silence to be thunderous. Nobody wants to bail him out, because they know, thanks to public reaction, that it would be considered "blood money."
