@Lana Leigh loves Meryl Streep: During the day. As I understand it the Ramadan fast permits minimal water and plain food at night during that month -- but not like a break-the-fast type indulgence.
@sportz.star: Oh, my biffers always breaks the day fast with fritos and bean dip. I asked her why she breaks the fast with such rich food and she always says its because she's part Mexican. Then I stop asking questions.
I wonder how the dancers are treated. I mean, it's a conservative place so I wonder if they get manhandled and groped a lot or if people actually just watch them dance.
@KiddyKat: I've been told that the proper belly dance etiquette in the Middle East is to throw money at the dancers (as opposed to sticking it in their belt), as to shower them with money. I assume Iraq is the same way.
@GirlSailor:Dancers used to sew the money they received from performing into their scarves (which is why you see many modern belly dancers wearing "coin belts" like the one in the picture above), so yes, people used to throw change. I've only seen it done with paper money though :)
Also, Jezebel Editors, best Snap Judgements EVER today. I'm up to my neck in papers for school, and seeing the girls you've shown today has reminded me why I'm busting my ass in grad school. So thanks for the encouragement. I'm gonna go cry a bit and write a bunch about girls' education now.
Her eyes are too grown up for her age. It makes me so sad what she has been through... Since I have had kids I can barely take hearing/reading about terrible things happening to children. I just imagine my own kids going through it and I can't stand it, I really can't.
The fuzzy headband is the real icing on the cake here. It looks like one of those ones with wacky springs on top of it. The fact that they make those in Iraq somehow makes the world seem like a not so bad place.
I want to bring Miraim to my home and give her a pink bedroom with butterflies and stars hanging from the ceiling. We'll make tiaras out of tinfoil and capes out of blankets. I'll teach her to bake my secret recipie for chocolate cookies. I'll read to her at night and when she has nightmares (and I'm sure she does), I'll be there to hold her and tell her "everything will be ok".
I took dance lessons for 11 years (ballet, tap, jazz, modern and pointe), and it really was an escape for me. As much as a loathed lessons, dancing around at home was (and still is) a great stress release for me. There's nothing else quite like it. I have always been an artsy-fartsy kid, and I know the looks on those kids' faces.
This is really wonderful. I hope they can put on "The Nutcracker". GOOO KIDS GOOOO
What a beautiful story. The human capacity to transcend above hate and violence always astounds me, and I'm so happy that these kids have a place to go to express themselves and feel safe.
If there was more than a couple weeks left in school, I would try and do something for the kids in Iraq through some sort of fundraising drive. Alas, maybe next year.

And I really hope that this organization can be the beginning of breaking down the barrier between Sunnis and Shiites. The youngins are the future!

And I love babies, Seth, but mostly I like getting babies from exotic places.
